Still at 12 ytd, which is lower than atleast the past 5 years. A 37% decrease from last year. I hope the march-numbers were temporary.

What surprised me the most was the low % of gun related homicides so far compared to previous years. Just 15%. Its usually around 50%.

These are all Year to Date numbers this year compared to this time last year. Denver and Los Angeles have managed to keep both murders and major crimes down. Chicago and DC seem to have struggled the most relative to last year --

In Atlanta, murders are down 49% (43 to 22) and major crimes are even (5,088 to 5,090).

In Boston, murders are up 220% (5 to 11), but major crimes are down 7% (3,535 to 3,301).

In Denver, murders are down 18% (22 to 18) and major crimes are down 13% (13,570 to 11,764).

In Chicago, murders are down 15% (138 to 117), but major crimes are up 46% (12,428 to 18,083).

In Los Angeles, murders are down 26% (89 to 66), and major crimes are down 5% (32,972 to 31,491).

In New York, murders are down 11% (103 to 92), and majors crimes are even (29,592 to 29,648).

In Philadelphia, murders are down 14% (127 to 109), but major crimes are up 22% (17,943 to 21,831).

In San Francisco, murders are up 20% (10 to 12), but major crimes are down 10% (13,180 to 11,904).

In Washington, DC murders are up 31% (45 to 59) and major crimes are up 24% (6,695 to 8,285).

Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why crime is up and down in some cities. Probably just luck of the draw at this point.

DC strikes me as very unexpected.

Isn't the entire city gentrified at this point? These must be taking place in a few super concentrated areas.

The Boston increase is 120% not 220%.

Maybe most/all of NW DC is gentrified, but I have a hard time believing anything east of the Anacostia River is. That's most of SE and part of NE DC...not a tiny geography.

The eastern half (and especially the eastern third) of DC still has a big concentration of low(er) income black households. Basically everything east of the Anacostia River is still pretty rough. I imagine 95% of the homicides are in the eastern half of the city.

Also, DC kinda has a Sunbelt hood look where things often don't look superficially dangerous. Nowhere looks like Camden or West Baltimore or North Philly. There are no abandoned buildings. There's investment in even the worst areas.

Random observation, but it's interesting to see how Chicago and Philadelphia seem to trend so similarly. . . not just crime and murders but many other metrics. . . anecdotally speaking of course. . .

What seems to be happening is that homicides related to organized crime (ie. mostly using guns) are way down, while random attacks and disputes (ie. mostly involving knives) are up. Not sure that's a positive development overall. In particular, there have been a number of cases of people being randomly stabbed on the TTC in recent months.

Since this is a skyscraper forum, I'll tie in the story to skyscrapers. This is the building the murderer's plastic surgeon brother-in-law works in, 450 Sutter, mainly used as a medical office building. A beautiful 26-story, 344 ft tall neo-Mayan art deco building known for its elaborate lobby.

Glorious building. I used to go to my doctor there way back in the 1970s. A friend of mine still visits his octogenarian primary care physician at 450 Sutter.

Wow, that building is incredible. Never knew about that art deco tower. The interior hallway is absolutely amazing.

Everytime I talk to my mom (in Houston) she always warns me how bad SF is and to stay away from there and I have to remind her that Houston is far more shooty and violent than SF but it just doesn't click. I am in SF all the time and I am aware of the issues there but tend to avoid the troublesome areas. Never had an issue yet.

450 Sutter is a glorious building, through and through. It is notable for being filled with a ton of dentists' offices, which is why so many San Franciscans laughingly refer to it as 450 Suffer.

Another stabbing this week making the news, this time in Edmonton IIRC.

Good thing we don't have anything like the Second Amendment, at least our crazies tend to have to limit themselves to stabbing ...

No homicides for about 3 weeks now, so Toronto is experiencing a dry spell. Homicides seem to come in waves, which is a peculiar sociological phenomenon.

Teens rioting in the loop last night. At least the voters are getting what they want.

11 killed in Chicago this weekend. I think we are up to 161 now. Not sure if any of the people shot in the riots died.

I can imagine that with your talent, you could photograph that building like no one else ever has.
