As this form has a lot of people who know a lot about the Empire State Building I felt this was the correct place to ask for help. Recently for fun I was calculating the overall square footage of the some my famous skyscrapers in American History with enough information to be able to calculate the overall mass of skyscrapers. Some of the easier ones I calculated because of the easy build dimensions. Original 1 World Trade Center - 59,185,152 sq feet, Original 2 World Trade Center - 58,925,568 sq feet, Willis Tower - 53,572,500 sq feet. Recently I’ve been trying to calculate the overall square footage of the Empire State Building but have been stuck as I don’t know the build dimensions from of the Empire State Building between the 71st floor to the 89th floor. I’m unable to calculate square footage size accurately. But the Empire State Building is likely between 32,000,000 square feet - 34,000,000 square feet in size. These are the calculations I have so far. I would appreciate if anyone could help with finding the dimensions for the floors I could not find.

Floors (1-5) 424 feet x 187 feet x 73.5 feet
= 5,827,668 sq feet with deductions

Floors (6-20) 309.67 feet x 164.67 feet x 177.5 feet = 8,147,991 sq feet with deductions

Floors (21-24) 235 feet x 164.67 feet x 49.5 feet = 1,764,200 sq feet with deductions

Floors (25-29) 230.17 feet x 134.5 feet x 63 feet = 1,842,238 sq feet with deductions

Floors (30-71)
185.83 feet x 134.33 feet x 502.5 feet
= 11,518,849 sq feet with deductions

Empire State Building Floors 1-71
= 29,100,946 sq feet

Mast above 89th floor = 522,651 sq feet

The deductions I have written are the areas of the building that are smaller in certain parts of the floor due to the art deco design.

Night and Weekend Construction Work on the Empire State Building

From what I understand, the Empire State Building was constructed in just 410 days from March 17, 1930 to April 11, 1931 with opening day being May 1, 1931. This was done at an average of 4 floors per week, with one 10 day period seeing 14 floors being built. At it's height in August 1930, there were 3,400 workers on site. There are a number of sources online and books that talk about how the building was built so fast. I also understand that most of the work from March 17, 1930 to April 11, 1931 was done on a regular workday from Monday-Friday during a 9 am to 5 pm period. About all that was done during the night and weekends were clearing the construction debris, maintaining the construction, equipment for the next work day, and extending the shafts for the next workday. This would likely have involved a much smaller crew than the regular workday crew. I do know that excavations from January 1930 to March 1930 took place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So, does anyone here have any additional information on what construction work on the Empire State Building took place over the night and weekend besides clearing construction debris, maintaining construction equipment, and extending the shafts.

ESB is much more handsome than any of the new supertall interlopers.

It's been looking even better since they cleaned up the spire.

Is it possible to know the REAL number of floors (1 roof=1 floor) from 86th floor to 102nd floor? Are them REALLY 15 floors with 15 roofs inside the spire? Thanks for the possible reply.

This thread on Skyscraper City asks the same question and it seems no definitive answer.

At the beginning of the 2000s, Frankfurt was planning a building with a similar height of 1211 feet and 97 floors.
Unfortunately, these plans were never realized.

The Empire State Building is about 90 percent occupied as of November 2023. This is in contrast to the majority of other office buildings in New York City.
