Yonah Freemark's annual report on anticipated transit openings for 2018 is out and is a good read. Our list already included everything likely to open this coming year.

Yonah also lists some projects that haven't begun construction yet but may soon. These stay off our list for now, but keep an eye on them:

Minneapolis' SW light rail
Toronto Finch West light rail
Tacoma light rail extension
Fort Lauderdale streetcar
Orange County streetcar
Seattle Center City streetcar
Tempe streetcar
Denver North commuter rail
NYC East Side Access commuter rail
San Bernardino Redlands commuter rail

He also includes major BRT projects, which we do not attempt to track here.

Minneapolis' Southwest line has gotten bogged down in politics. Under the original timeline it was supposed to be completed by now but still hasn't begun. Part of the problem is that it is a poorly designed line that skirts all the nearby walkable and dense parts of Minneapolis and mostly follows freight rail right of ways that don't have large nearby populations. This means that there is no grassroots constituency advocating for the line, and a lot against it. They should probably scrap it and start from scratch but the people who designed the line see it as the crowning achievement of their political/bureaucratic careers so they don't want to give up on it.

Does the route of the line anticipate a boom in residential development that compensates the current lower densities that they are using as an argument for?

This is the big problem with a planning process that takes a minimum of a decade to get through.

Per UrbanizeLA and the Source, the Purple Line subway phase 2 to Century City broke ground today. (Note this is after pre-construction and utility relocation). 2 stations and 2.6 miles.

Edited to reflect the LA Purple Line phase 2.

Also, Charlotte's Blue Line LRT extension will open March 16. It's still on the construction list for now, but not for much longer!

The website to follow the constrution of Montréal's REM is now online : https://rem.info/en/home It is the same technology and trains used in Sydney Metro. (automated Alstom Metropolis) This is not light rail as understood from other cities but a light metro like Vancouver's SkyTrain and Honolulu.

Because it's not actually under construction yet. Or at least that's my understanding. Construction is supposed to begin in April.

If you can show me that it's under construction, I'll add it. Utility work doesn't count.

Ok, they started removing trees and land prep for excavation to start as per the info on the website. I don't mind the OCD on this.

How come Metro Vancouver's Evergreen Line isn't on this list? Completed in 2016. 11 KM. Skytrain. (fully grade separated and automatic, essentially the same as Honolulu)

Reread the title of this thread, (note the explanation) .....
"US only up until July 2017, Canada included after that"
I believe 2016 falls in line before 2017.

I read that as meaning the US openings have only been updated only up to July 2017, whereas the Canadian openings have been updated more recently.

To me it seems that a natural start time is when this thread was created, no? (2012)

If the meaning is what you suggest, should it not read, "US from 2012 (or some other specified date), Canada from 2017"?

Just seems odd to me given when this thread was initiated.

I even remember seeing the Evergreen Line on the U/C list on here.

It's because the thread was originally US only, and Canada was added only last year. So a detailed history of Canadian openings before that has not been compiled.

There were two separate threads, one American and one Canadian. That's why you think you saw it in the list - you saw it in the other thread. Canadian projects were included here starting in July 2017, so those are the only projects listed.

And I thought the description made sense myself.
