i’m deeply familar with a lot of the ozarks and spend a decent amount of time in eastern kentucky and they are definitely closely related - strikingly so for being so physically seperated so its natural that the ozarks would come up - hence thats why it keeps happening. i didnt technically bring them up though!

While I don't believe this is the Ozarks - it sure is pretty - and quite different from the Midwest.

Hilly area east of the Mississippi? As a sophisticated West Coaster I believe it's all the same place. And it's accurately described in one word: Deliverance.

The only thing completely unrealistic about Deliverance was Burt Reynolds' canoeing adventure outfit.

Wandered straight out of an Atlanta leather bar into the Cahulawassee River wilderness...

No wonder the backwoods boys took such a shine to the fancy city folk.

LOL! My dad (from Pittsburgh) said back in the 80s it was common for people to joke about going to Wheeling to get that Wheeling feeling. I shudder to think how bad the prostitutes must've been in Pittsburgh to make Wheeling seem like the desirable spot! Wheeling is pretttty gritty, and I can totally see prostitution being a thing there, especially around the casino. The casino on Wheeling Island has/had a racetrack attached to it...for dogs. Not horse racing, but greyhounds. Only place I've ever seen that.

I brought them up a page or two ago. They are clearly similar in geography and culture, much more than say NYC and Pittsburgh.

I was just curious how the Ozarks interacted with the midwest.

It's all good. I was just being a dick. I was referring to another thread in which the topic was brought up... it was only like last December... so I was like "didn't we just do this?"

I love the dog track! Getting drunk and blowing some cash on speedy pooches is fun. I watch them in Miami and in Wheeling... Wheeling's a lot cheaper.

Agreed. Also, you grew up in THE Great Lakes State.

I've always had issues with greyhound racing, but my family adopted several retired racers over the years. I remember a billboard for the track being a sore point while travelling through Wheeling en route to/from DC.

I don't want to know about what happens to greyhound racers past their prime!

I just want to watch and cheer on as those speedy pups tear on down the track.

I'm an animal lover, but most dogs after all are manmade, frankenstein-type creations, built for a human-serving purpose.

maybe just don't worry about it? if the conversation segues temporarily onto a related topic and you're not interested in that topic then don't participate in that part of the conversation. the idea that no conversation can ever veer away from the thread title is pretty dumb and not really your decision to make.

I wonder if cities like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, and St Louis should offer incentives for people to move there? If states can offer financial incentives to get businesses to move, why don't cities that have ample space and reasonable housing costs do the same?

that would fly like a lead ballon in st. louis...

i think its only feasible in towns or small cities that arent particularly politically charged. frankly i’d not be a fan of the idea unless it was a federal program.
