When was the last time we saw a bridge get built on such a massive scale in Canada? Maybe the Confederation Bridge?

The new Champlain Bridge in Montreal and the Port Mann bridge in Vancouver are some more recent examples I can think of.

The Champlain Bridge did occur to me, but I should have said *new* bridge.

Champlain is of similar scale, though quite different as it's generally a beam-bridge with a relatively small cable-stay span across the Canal. It's also longer overall and wider. It's main span is "only" 216m long.

Port Mann is also a replacement bridge, but it does have a larger main span (470m), and is also wider than Gordie Howe.

Gordie Howe has an 853m main span comparatively, making it the 10th longest cable stay bridge globally and the longest in the Americas. Outside of Asia, the only cable stay bridge longer is the Pont de Normandie bridge in France, which is a meagre 3 metres longer.

Looks like it will be quite majestic (though lacking that Calatrava fine$$e).

First cable-stayed bridge (partly) in Ontario?

Here’s a picture of Saint John Thruway over Saint John River during tonight’s unusual fog (“usual” according to SHH):

There was 0 traffic on it when I snapped the shot, so I thought the bridge was closed due to traffic. On my way back to hotel, though, I saw some traffic travelling WB on the thruway. I didn’t know that Thruway would get this dead past rush hour.
Ps: I wonder if this better belongs in the weather thread.

The replacement covered bridge in St. Martins NB is ready for it's official opening. This is the gateway to the Fundy Trail Parkway.

It is really rare to see a new covered bridge being built in Canada. The last new covered bridge in NB (also a replacement) is located in Fundy National Park, and that's about 20 years old.

That's very cool! Looks kind of weird in the side pic with it not being painted but once the wood has time to weather and darken it should be fine.

Not the first, actually. A cable-stay bridge was completed over the Nipigon River on Highway 11/17 about an hour east of Thunder Bay a few years ago, though it is a LOT smaller:

Definitely not the first in Ontario.

The Nipigon River Bridge (Hwys 11/17) in Nipigon opened in 2015.
