Peering through the Canadian Legs across the Detroit River to the American Legs. The Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Step 2 is almost complete.

Agreed, the old bridge is far better than anything modern we could end up with. Rebuilding the current bridge might end up being a "my grandfather's axe" type situation, but it would be worth it.

In any case, considering what it connects on both side of the river, and the modal share, closure of Wellington Street/proposed tram loop, along with the efforts to make the ByWard Market more pedestrian, cars should not be part of the equation.

The Alexandra Bridge can't be saved. There is nothing wrong with the steel structure, it's the pilings underneath that are failing. You can't rebuild the pilings without dismantling the bridge.

I drove across the Ambassador a week ago and the piers on Gordie Howe have met in the middle now. And they look huge despite having a ton of height still to go.

The Ambassador is down a lane right now for construction and clearly shows why the new bridge is needed. The line of trucks crossing stretched back to I75.

Old steel to be recycled for use in new structures. (perhaps that may even happen in Hamilton! though there are steel plants in Montreal)
That's only possible if it's all plate girders, we don't roll structural shapes in Canada.

In the same vane as the Alexandria Bridge. Edmonton's High Level bridge is in the discussion now, of replace or rebuild. The last rebuild updated the car deck and the piers.

He seems like a good namesake considering his legacy as one of the greatest Canadian hockey players of all time who played most of his career in Detroit.

Named after Mr. Hockey I think it's a great name. 25 Seasons in Detroit, it represents Detroit's love of him, and Canada's love of Hockey. Also it's a fun name to use, most bridges are named after historical figures or politicians. Seeing that this is an international bridge where that can rarely be done this is perfect choice in my opinion.

Big milestone for the new Pattullo bridge. Foundation just finished, meaning the main tower is going to start going up fairly soon. It's going to be a real cool sight for a short time seeing all four of these bridges in such close proximity when the new one is done.

I was going to say a Native American name might have been a good choice but their were different tribes at the time of colonization so choosing a name with a first nations figure may have been contentious. On the Detroit side you had the Potawatomi Tribe, and on the Canadian side the Mississauga Ojibway.

Here is the Gordie Howe bridge in Saskatoon.

It looks like a river crossing at the U.S Mexico border in this picture.

The Confederation Bridge from NB to PEI had it's 25th anniversary last week. It was a low key affair.

The PEI legislature BTW is petitioning the feds to have the bridge renamed Epekwitk Crossing. Epekwitk is the traditional Micmac name for PEI (anglicized as Abegweit).

I'm not sure how I feel about this......

Were they instrumental in the creation of the bridge?
