If indeed the storage facility on SG has ground floor retail, then I'd change my stance from "Hell no" to "I guess I could live with it."

Unrelated, does anyone know what's being constructed on Allegheny Ave between 17th and 18th?

Penn Medicine pays $16M for Elwyn care center site in University City expansion

The University of Pennsylvania's medical network has acquired the 2.75-acre University City property where Elwyn, a nonprofit group that serves people with disabilities, has operated a care center for more than 40 years.

Penn Medicine bought the 4040 Market Street property, which includes several buildings and parking lots over multiple parcels, for $16 million from Media-based Elwyn, according to Holly Auer, a spokeswoman for the university health system.

The medical network plans to relocate several functions from the nearby Penn Presbyterian Medical Center to buildings at the site to increase the hospital's critical-care capacity, Auer said in an email Wednesday. Also planned is space for community-based services, such as a day care center for autistic children, and the construction of townhouses along Ludlow Street, she said.

Auer declined to share further details about plans for the site, including the extent of renovations planned for existing buildings, how much new construction was anticipated, and specifics of the Penn Medicine's development budget.

Is this that awful building with a defunct Rainbow store? It has been screaming out for redevelopment for some time. Bones are arguably good, though. Demo or addition?

Looks like it is. The way I read the plans they'll be building 6 additional stories over the existing 3 stories (3 story existing front, 1 story existing rear).

re 1208 Chestnut--

Not sure how they're going to make this happen. Both adjacent buildings have windows on their party walls.

Here's what the building originally looked like-- a fire took it down to 3 stories in the late 30s/early 40s

^^^^^^^^^what a great building. Too bad that isn't the plan for what's being proposed for today.

Thank God my late 90s German car crapped out on me a month ago, as that's Euro Dyno Werk's building. Maybe the Fillmore can do something about the crappy way they restored their building on Frankford to make that stretch really take off.

Supposedly delivery date is end of 2019-- but those timelines are always optimistic.

A few pages ago we talked about an ill-placed storage facility. Here's another one at the corner of Leverington and Main Street in Manayunk where the old Rambo's Ice used to be. I thought they were building condos or apartments here but construction is nearly done and yea, it's a self storage place. Close to the shops and restaurants of Main Street, the toepath, and the train station....but hey, at least the neighbors don't have to worry about more cars fighting for spots. No wonder this project didn't cause any controversy.

While apartments would be better there, I don't find that one as offensive. It's a really odd site right there, stuck between the SEPTA line and the tail end of the Manayunk Bridge and on a slope. The walk to Main Street from there isn't particularly pleasant either. It's a tough site.

Beat me to it with The National update.
The only thing I will add is -- the juxtaposition going on here -- there's a lot going on here.
First, the building itself trying to blend a mid-century mod base with 21st century VE multi-colored metal panels on top. And second, perhaps more strikingly, this building standing literally about 5 ft from Elfreth's Alley. (I sort of oddly like this building--but it's bizarre).

----------------------------

Some other Old City projects:

401 Race is sssstill a work in progress, I swear this has been going on as long as CTC.

Score another win for PMC Property--remember when this was planned the OC Neighborhood Assoc. were freaking out about its height and not fitting in (somehow) -- it fits in perfectly. Very handsome building here.

----------------------
313 Race -- another building that's been u/c for what seems like years.
