I always thought that S-F was in a weird location for the Bears, so it makes sense to me that they would be moving.

If you lived here... you would have never made that statement.

Bears applied to demolish the grandstand on May 3rd and the city of Arlington Heights says they have no say in the matter.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/subur...ge4-story.html

Quote:
“The village does not have any authority to withhold approval of demolition for any reason if the application is complete and the property owners’ demolition plans comply with the village code,” Hayes said at the meeting.

He and other Village Board members said the village is “100% committed” to transparency as the village and team navigate the early stages of what could be a behemoth project at the old racetrack.

The Bears closed on the 326-acre racecourse site in February, then applied May 3 to tear down the iconic grandstand.
I was hoping Arlington Heights would work with the Bears to preserve the grandstand. I don't see why they can't incorporate it into their development plan. It seems like such a waste.

Naw, just tear it all down and lower the tax rates to "unimproved land."

Naperville wooing Bears, who say they're no longer solely focused on Arlington Heights
Quote:
The Chicago Bears say they are no longer laser-focused on their ambitions for building a massive stadium and commercial site in Arlington Heights and will listen to a pitch today from the mayor of Naperville on building there instead.

The team said in a statement that their plans to build the massive site are "in danger" after Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi upped the property tax tab of the Arlington International Racecourse six-fold after the Bears bought the site.

"It is our responsibility to listen to other municipalities in Chicagoland about potential locations that can deliver on this transformational opportunity for our fans, our club and the State of Illinois," the team said.

In all sadness though, if the Bears pulled a 180 and went to Naperville, that would leave the Arlington Park site as a gross eye sore given they have started the demolition. I'm sad to see it go - I went there once with some family to watch a horse race, and it was a great way to have fun on a warm Summer day.

My prediction:

Unable to get the corporate welfare they require from AH, the Bears abandon Arlington Park after trashing the place and close on a new site in Naperville. The process repeats itself in Naperville and the Bears pack up their ball and move to Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, where land is cheap and taxes are low. They squeeze the locals for a Foxconn-style sweethart incentive deal and build their dome somewhere between an Amazon fulfillment center and the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Huzzah!

It would be hilarious if they just keep repeating this dance with all these counties until there aren't any left. They won't abandon Chicagoland

The vacant South Works site has tons of issues but would be kind of a badass place for a stadium.

Send this pathetic excuse of a football franchise down to St. Louis.

Or better yet, the league should just fold these clowns out of existence and start over with a brand new Chicago team.

We could name 'em the Chicago Ditka's!

It's not John Fisher Oakland A's level greed but it's getting there.

But a better place for housing. Sports stadiums are not the great activators and generators of economic activity that they are hyped to be, and a football stadium empty 95% of the year is hands down the worst. Gobbling up a huge chunk of that beautiful site for a dormant concussionball stadium would be an injustice. It would be a dramatic site though no doubt. South Works will work out one of these days, unfortunately I just suspect that's still a few decades away.

Depends on the half-life of whatever it is that's in the "remediated" soil that keeps scaring people away.

Nah. If South Works was North Works it could have uranium buried there and it would have been redeveloped years ago. End of story.

^ Exactly. Developers wanted to develop the North Branch into residential for decades, in spite of all the pollutants in the soil, but Daley introduced PMD zoning to block any potential development. As soon as the area was rezoned for residential, there's been a flood of mega-developments: Lincoln Yards, Halsted Point, the casino, NOMA, and more still to come. Because of how segregated development is in Chicago, South Works won't be developed for quite some time

I'll say it right now. Fuck that pathetic excuse for a football team. Fuck their ownership, fuck their hardball tactics, fuck everything about them. Good riddance to those jagoffs!

They can use the land for the Foxconn TV factory or whatever was supposed to happen there.
