This happened to be in the newspaper today.

Revitalizing the west end of downtown

Two hotels, two office buildings in various stages of approval

The west end of downtown St. John’s has become a hotbed of proposed activity, and could see four new, commercial buildings built within the next year or so.

There are four developments in the same general area. The only one that has been approved so far is a five-storey hotel on the north side of Water Street between Gaze Seeds and the Magic Wok restaurant.

But the city has also received other applications which are in various stages of approval. They include a 12-storey Class A office building on the former Horwood Lumber property off Springdale Street and between Water and New Gower streets; a12-storey hotel for the corner of Springdale and New Gower streets at the foot of Pleasant Street and a recent application for an eight-storey office building and three-storey parking garage on Job Street at the bottom of Hamilton Avenue.

Wow Suagga is junk. I'm sorry thought its going to take a lot to fix that mess. What will you do when you have to re-model the SFH homes on the fringes? good luck.

.. and oh! Victoria's grid FTW!

Glad to see St John's getting some action! Keep them proposals comin'! If this continues St John's skyline will become a small but dense and consistent one like Victoria, and that's a good thing!

Almost of all of St. John's use the same "organic" street pattern, even the new parts.

How often do you go downtown?

How often do you go downtown in you city?

Me (Halifax):
Now: Work downtown.
Before that: Less than once a week but more than once a month for dim sum.
Before that: Downtown was a mysterious place!

Once or more per week, though this doesn't really reflect how much time I spend downtown. I'm there at least once per day and sleep there at least 4 nights/week.

I live and work on the edge of downtown. Haven't been to the suburbs in about 3 weeks. I've gone to our big box shopping area, but that's a former industrial park between two downtowns, and not a real suburban area.

For you guys in smaller cities, you have to be downtown pretty often because if you're not, you're either in the middle of nowhere or in a completely different place. As for me I study downtown, so it's pretty much 4-5 times a week.

I live and work in downtown, only about 2 blocks commute! I don't feel that I would ever be persuaded to move out to the suburbs again, just not my thing at all.

Live downtown. In Calgary I stay with my mom either in the suburbs or outside the CMA, but even then I'm downtown almost daily. When I move back there I'll try to be as close to downtown as possible.

Technically I'm in downtown everyday since it is where the GO station is but I dunno if that counts.

Without the train I'm probably in downtown less than once a month during the school year but everyday during breaks. Downtown Guelph has an amazing number of bars for such a small area.

I live just outside of Edmonton, in Beaumont, and rarely cross the river north into the real downtown of Edmonton - however, the city's layout is a little different than a lot in Canada. I would consider the more vibrant area in the city in Old Strathcona (a lot of visitors would consider that area "downtown") and go there very often to visit the city market, botique shops and bars / restaurants.

When I lived in St. John's I lived in downtown and never left there. I could seriously count the times on my hands that I left the immediate downtown area in years, other than to drive out of the city.

I also live and work downtown. I have a three block commute, and during poor weather I can cut through multiple buildings including our downtown market.

London has a boatload of beautiful innercity neighbourhoods full of tree-lined streets and prewar stock, but I just love the energy and variety downtown offers. Plus, rooftop shenanigans during outdoor parking lot concerts is rad. Aftermath from a Snoop Dogg concert:

Charming. Must have been fun, but I hate it when people litter like that.

As for me, it really depends on the time of year. During my lazy periods I tend to go downtown about 4+ times per week, usually for restaurants, entertainment or to buy stuff I can't get in the suburbs (which, in London, are like 15 minutes away). During exams, my life is confined to the University campus, my house and a 1.6 kilometer stretch of Windermere Road.

Depends what downtown. The "downtown" of my town of 10,000 people? Daily. Mind you it's only 3 blocks of urban retail, with a couple of resturarants. I'm lucky to get downtown toronto more than once every other month, as it is an hour and a half GO bus ride each way that cost $20 bucks to do the round trip.

Nah, you got it all wrong. That was taken the morning after the show before everything'd been cleaned up. We consider it a privilege to be allowed on the roof, and respect it like any balcony or back yard.
