I assume they're going to decorate the exterior?

Yeah, they were still on the assembly line in California in the picture I posted above and have yet to be painted in the UTA livery:

The picture was from Daybreak's facebook page. (facebook.com/Daybreakutah)
We should be able to see them testing in Daybreak by the end of the month.

The new cars will have to run through the existing stations as at least the Mid-Jordan line will continue up the existing track to downtown. No modification is needed to make the existing platforms compatible, the current wheelchair ramps will just not be needed anymore.

They need to put a small piece of metal on the trains to make the gap between the car and the platform smaller because the new train cars will be slightly further away from the platform. A small modification that no one will notice.

Something similar to the small extenders at the doors on FrontRunner trains?

Yep. Hardly noticable and most probably will not think twice about it.

Like the new trains, but they still don't seem to be on the coolness level of Phoenix, Houston, or Charlotte, to name a few.

Phoenix's trains were made by some japanese company, but Charlotte and Houston both use Seimen's S-70 trains, the same model that UTA has ordered.

Yeah that's what I thought, but at least from the pics, they don't look as good. Perhaps I'll have to reserve judgment for when they're actually on the track.

These are the Trax trains I was expecting to see...

It looks like Houston upgraded to the sport package :-)
Still the same basic train however.
One reason that you may like the look of Houston's trains better is that they only run one car consists, so there is no need for any linkage at the front to connect to another car.

Ours will look more like these in San Diego:

How many of their current vehicles were bought from the manufacturers, and how many were purchased from other cities? Anyone know?

From wikipedia:

Number of vehicles
23 Siemens SD-100 LRVs
29 Siemens SD-160 LRVs
29 UTDC
77 Avanto S70 (on order)

The 29 UTDC Vehicles are old vehicles that UTA purchased from San Jose. I believe that the rest of the Seimens vehicles (52 total) were purchased new. The initial order of the new vehicles from Siemens is for 77.

I don't care what the new ones look like as long as they replace those ghetto trains from San Jose. I was riding on them downtown the other day going to the Jazz game it was rocking so hard I thought we were going to tip over. Ha ha!

So will those "ghetto" trains be replaced completely by the new cars? Those trains are like your weird relatives that embarrass you and you just hope that when you are trying to impress someone they aren't around. I appreciate UTA trying to keep their costs down, but those trains make riding uninviting.

This pertains to the mid-jordan line at Old Bingham Highway and 4800 West.

The berm by my house is ugly and poses a safety risk in my opinion. Exiting my neighborhood, there is a huge mound of dirt that stops right against the road... if the grade fails and a train's coming, you're not going to see it.

Not to mention, it's like... sound wall, huge ass berm, sound wall... and the berm only lasts 1/4 mile. It looks very asymmetrical too.

I suspect all-red makes the trains more visible. Safety, etc.

Utah Legislature: State may delay road projects to save money

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...-projects.html

SALT LAKE CITY — That road construction project in your town? You may not see shovels digging in any time soon.

A handful of road projects could be delayed to save the state about $100 million. Most of the projects on the list are street widening or bridges to better accommodate traffic near railroads. Most are along the Wasatch Front, including $37.5 million in Utah County...
