NWC is just selling a chunk of their owned Giant Tigers back to Giant Tiger.

They sold most of their stores back to Giant Tiger head office. They are keeping a few GTs in northern areas. NWC is going to focus on its northern stores, apparently they weren’t making a go of the GT stores.

I'm not sure if it still applies but in an interview a few years ago the GT founder said that he wanted the chain to be the "WAL-Mart of Canada"

Absurd. It's a convenient little shop in places without Walmarts nearby (small towns, inner city areas), but it is rendered totally irrelevant when it's anywhere near Walmart.

I think he was expecting to grow to the same size as Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart started in a little store in a small town in the US and grew to its current size.

"Wal-Mart of remote, rural Northern Canada"

Sad day, one of Winnipeg top employers, New Flyer/ MCI is permanently laying off 300 workers and the rest of workforce worldwide (around 6600) are on min 2 week shutdown (vacation if you have it).

When this inevitably lasts beyond this initial 2 weeks you will be able to sub out many companies in that line.

West Jet 'permanently laid off' / bought out 6900 employees. Half their work force. I don't get it. Won't they need those people back in a couple months? My friend is super disappointed. She's worked there for over 10 years and says that company is done. Will never be the same, if they survive at all.

Why wouldn't they just lay off employees due to work shortage, like happens all the time, with the plant o bring them back. Happens en masse every winter.

^ I think they are still miffed about the union thing.

Westjet of the past 5 or so years IMO is no different than any other major airline. The level of service is interchangeable from AC, and if anything, AC is probably better.

They lost their quirky upstart attitude.

This info is wrong. There was an option for early retirement for people who wanted to leave permanently, but the vast majority are on a temporary leave of absence. It's exactly what you said, a layoff due to work shortage, and there is already a return plan.

Well that's good. Even the news I watched, CTV maybe, made it sound like those people were gone permanently.

Yeah, some of the news reports were very dramatic. CBC does a better job reporting on it. (My partner is WestJet cabin crew so I've got a front-row seat as this plays out.)

nwc? northwest company? the business isn't all run out of that little building, they have a huge warehouse in NW Wpg and stores all across the North.

or do you mean NFI? New Flyer? and if so that is not a tiny building, they have a huge campus in TCona, multiple buildings

I just got an online involice from Shaw for Internet service, claiming I owe them $256 and that this months' invoice amount alone is $131 (for Shaw 300). Did something change or is something else going on? Normally my Internet is $61.60 per month.

I pay my invoice on time every month as soon as I get paid.

I live alone and don't have anyone else using it here.

Is this a billing error? Has anyone else recently got an invoice that is unusually high? I logged on to my.shaw.ca tot confirm the amounts.

Oh, and by the way, their staff "is being trained to work from home" and calling in may take longer than normal.

Did a promo period end, lil zebra? Prices often jump steeply after the 6 month, or 1 year or whatever promo period ends.

I signed on when I moved to my current apt. first week of Jan 2020.

It's more than double the $61. Ouch.

I use it for editing Wikipedia and watching YouTube and listening to radio via TuneIn.com and e-mail. Nothing else. No one else living with me.

I remember the days in the mid-1990s when dial-up was $20 / month.

I see that there is an Internet 300 which I have and a lower cost and lower capped Internet 50. I can probably get by with the '50' plan.
