Upper Amenity Deck - west glass

Got em' LVDW...

Looks like they took a break after a few passes at it. The wind had picked up and it was swinging around. But they called it off and down it came back to it's starting position.

Hey wolf point watcher, your picture literally has a tag-line attached to the panel, a strong gust of wind came out of nowhere, almost putting my crew in danger. We stopped hoisting, out of caution for all the pedestrians and cars. Nice pictures, luckily no one got hurt today.

Reflections

Thanks... Indeed IW, glad everyone is safe first and foremost. Pretty amazing how you guys pull off these glass setting feats that high up with that large of a section to begin with. Impressive!

I also managed to catch a 10sec video with my iPhone of it getting lowered afterward... the reflections are pretty sweet off the glass with the clouds...

We’re starting again tomorrow morning. Better wind conditions, but most of us would like to be home.

Thanks for posting. I was watching you guys earlier and kept thinking how hairy that could get with all the weight and surface area. You guys do good work...

With the sad news of Cesar Pelli's passing, I was curious if anyone here knows to what degree, if any, Cesar himself might have had in the design of WPE & WPS. To what capacity was he still engaged in actual design work at his firm in the twilight of his storied life/career?

A legend lost... such dynamic and proud looking designs. From cutting edge to clean and seamless, he wasn't a one trick pony like some out there... 92 years old, what a life

If he didn't directly work on this design himself, Mr Pelli's visions are clearly carried through via his understudies within his office.

181 W. Madison has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid running permits at city hall. Had to park down the street and walk past it everyday. It's so modest yet incredibly handsome and refined (and white). It's unfortunate that it's tucked in a pretty crowded/unseen place (It's average height makes it even less well-known/seen), but she's pure Pelli and a beauty. Very fortunate to have it in Chicago (also, if you get a chance, walk in and see the lobby!)

WPEs' glass work has many Pelli elements but is not nearly as tight and a bit more watered down (imo) in comparison to his other skyscraper work. Suggesting to me he didn't have a direct hand in it. Maybe we will find out.

It's another one of those towers that feels so much larger than what the numbers spell out. Chase tower is like that too...

I wish they'd incorporated a new public elevator into the corner of the base right there. That brick elevator hut looks rather frumpy now, blocking off the shiny new base behind it.

Hopefully with the 3rd tower and a rework of the public space.
