California comfort food spot Black Bear Diner plans Texas expansion, including San Antonio location

https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio...t?oid=27986287

It’s not just California residents that are flocking to Texas. A new comfort food spot based in the Sunshine State is also headed our way.

Redding, California-based Black Bear Diner will open its first Alamo City location this summer at 2707 SE Military Dr., serving up its “home-style comfort food classics” for breakfast, lunch and dinner, news site MySA reports.

The San Antonio location, which formerly housed short-lived Market Barbecue, is one of six corporate-owned locations planned for the Lone State State. Other future Texas locations include McAllen, Mesquite, Fort Worth and the Austin area, MySA reports.

The diner is known for its stick-to-your-ribs fare such as chicken fried steak benedict, homemade meatloaf and slow-cooked pot roast.

Southside ice house project gets go-ahead from historic review board

https://sanantonioreport.org/southsi...-review-board/

The owners of a 1-acre site in the Mission Historic District can move ahead with plans to develop a neighborhood gathering spot after a review panel recently approved modifications to the property.

The project, at 207 Roosevelt Ave., will transform a site now zoned for industrial use near the trails of the Mission Reach into an open-air entertainment center. Design plans show one building labeled “ice house.”

“It’s a fabulous location,” said architect Jerry Lammers, principal with Alamo Architects, who represented owner Joe Bakke before the Historic and Design Review Commission hearing.

“There’s really nothing like this down in that area of town,” he said. “The goal for the project is really for it to be a neighborhood project.”

Plans show an open lawn area with picnic tables surrounded by existing buildings on the site that will be renovated, with two additional commercial buildings to be constructed.

I remember a while back, an In-N-Out was supposed to go there. If that's the case, that intersection is going to be hell during lunch hours especially with Chick-Fil-A hogging up that entire road, lol.

Smoke adding roof deck, dining room to downtown San Antonio space

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/ba...-Editors-Picks

The 12,000-square-foot bar currently features a stage, VIP cabana-style seating, plenty of bench space on two lawns, two bars, and numerous TVs to catch sporting events. Downtown skyline views are another pull for Martinez and his team. Records filed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation show a $250,000 expansion is in the works. The expected completion is set for June 1. Once complete, Smoke will boast a new roof deck and dining room nearing 4,000 square feet, records show.

After bones discovered in La Villita, a Fig Tree employee says he was fired for refusing to destroy them

https://www.expressnews.com/business...s-16788173.php

A construction crew working at the Fig Tree Restaurant in La Villita Historic Arts District last year uncovered various artifacts from the 1800s.

Now, a chef who was part of the restaurant’s team says in a lawsuit that he was fired for refusing to dispose of the findings so construction could continue. They included about 500 human or animal bones, says John McCormack, the former chef.

George Lopez's 'bad ass' tacos are available in San Antonio

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/ar...o-16800927.php

It looks like George Lopez Tacos is now delivering "bad ass" tacos to folks in San Antonio via food delivery apps like DoorDash and UberEats, so I had to try them.

Let's just say they could be "bad asser."

San Antonio's longtime Quarry tenant Max's Wine Dive closes for good

ttps://www.mysanantonio.com/food/article/San-Antonio-Quarry-Max-s-Wine-Dive-closed-16825410.php

Max's Wine Dive, known for being a Quarry Village stop for fried chicken and Southern fare for more than a decade, is closed for good, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

A sign posted at the 340 E Basse Road restaurant on Tuesday states Max's would be closed January 31 through February 2, however a worker on-site told the Express-News the closure is permanent.

MySA's multiple attempts to reach ownership have been unsuccessful as of this write. Additionally, the San Antonio installment of the small Texas chain is no longer listed on maxswinedive.com. The San Antonio location's phone number is no longer in service and the restaurant's official Facebook page categorizes it as permanently closed

Owners of San Antonio watering holes partner with Current for inaugural Ice House Week

https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio...t?oid=28136863

Popular drinking spots the Friendly Spot and Dakota Eastside Icehouse have joined forces with the Current to launch San Antonio Icehouse Week, a 10-day celebration of some of the city’s most vibrant indoor-outdoor bars and restaurants.

From Feb. 25 to March 6, roughly 30 participating icehouses will offer specialty pricing, prizes and giveaways. A portion of proceeds will benefit LiftFund, a San Antonio nonprofit that offers loans, grants and resources to local startups and small businesses.

Alamo City entrepreneurs Jody Newman — of Bruno’s Dive Bar and the Friendly Spot — and Dakota Eastside Icehouse’s Kent Oliver dreamed up Icehouse Week as a way to support local, independent small businesses in the wake of the pandemic — all while celebrating the icehouse's vital place in South Texas culture.

Drinking spots taking part in the inaugural Icehouse Week include Big Hops, Brooster’s Backyard, Burleson Beer Yard, Lucy Cooper’s Texas Icehouse, Social Spot and Windmill Icehouse, among others. A full list is available online.

Lulu’s famously huge cinnamon rolls are coming back

https://www.expressnews.com/food/res...s-16829894.php

San Antonio’s most famous gut-busting confection is set to make a triumphant return this month: Lulu’s big-as-your-head cinnamon rolls.

When Lulu’s Bakery & Cafe closed early in the pandemic, the restaurant’s iconic 3 ½-pound cinnamon roll became one of the city’s most famous culinary casualties. While Lulu’s isn’t coming back, its ginormous sweet treat will be revived at both Green Vegetarian Cuisine locations beginning on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

Green Vegetarian Cuisine owner Mike Behrend is the son of Lulu’s founder Lulu Singleton and said in a news release he’ll be baking the massive rolls using his mother’s original recipe, which dates back to 1992.

Pinstack chain to open entertainment and dining venue near San Antonio’s North Star Mall

https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio...t?oid=28172426

Entertainment and dining chain Pinstack will make its Alamo City debut later this year, bringing a massive facility featuring bowling, laser tag, rock climbing walls and giant foosball to the North Star Mall area.

Dallas-based Entertainment Properties Group Inc. said the 54,000-square-foot venue will be its fifth in Texas.

The San Antonio location is slated to open in late 2022, according to the company. Construction is now underway at 742 NW Loop 410 in the Park North Shopping Center.

The new Pinstack will offer 28 bowling lanes, replete with lane-side service from a "Bowl Bar" that includes food, wine, cocktails and two dozen draft beers, according to the company. The venue also will include arcade games, an elevated ropes course, a massive rock-climbing wall, laser tag and bumper cars.

EPG currently has Pinstack locations in Plano, Irving, Allen and Austin, the latter of which opened in February 2020.
