Terminal 1 Extension to Commence Operation on 29 November 2019

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) announced that the extension of Terminal 1 (T1) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has been scheduled to commence operation on 29 November 2019, adding a new Aisle L with 48 check-in counters and bringing the total number of check-in counters in T1 to 369. The number of smart check-in kiosks in T1 will also increase to over 100 at the extended departure level.

In tandem with the opening of T1 extension, Terminal 2 (T2) will be decommissioned temporarily for expansion as part of the Three-runway System (3RS) project. Check-in counters at T2 will suspend operation at around 2300hrs on 28 November 2019, after which the check-in service for all airlines will be conducted in T1.

Ancillary services currently provided in T2, including the lost and found office and baggage storage service will be relocated to T1 and start operation on 29 November. The new ticketing counters for cross-boundary limousine and coach service will be relocated to the Arrivals level of the T1 extension area and open on the same day. Two additional baggage reclaim carousels in the restricted area at Arrivals level, catering kiosks and offices, will commence operation in phases.

Signage and notices will be updated to provide clear directions, while additional manpower will be deployed to assist passengers.

The decommissioned T2 is expected to reopen in 2024 after expansion, along with the commissioning of the entire 3RS.T2 will then be a full service terminal providing both arrivals and departure services.

HKIA Announces Traffic Figures for January

(HONG KONG, 16 February 2020) – Traffic figures at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw decreases in January 2020. During the month, HKIA handled 5.7 million passengers and 33,210 flight movements, representing year-on-year decreases of 11.7% and 9.1%, respectively. Cargo throughput dropped 10.4% compared to the same month last year, to 359,000 tonnes.

Overall passenger traffic to/from Mainland China, South Korea and Southeast Asia recorded the most significant decreases in January. Visitor traffic remained weak, showing a year-on-year decrease of 43%. However, travel by Hong Kong residents saw a surge during the Chinese New Year holidays, amounting to a monthly growth of 25% year-on-year.

Cargo throughput declined due to closure of factories and businesses in Mainland China during the Chinese New Year holidays. The decrease in cargo was mainly attributed to the 15% and 10% drops in imports and transshipments, respectively. Exports decreased by 9% compared to the same month last year. Amongst key trading regions, traffic to/from Southeast Asia and North America decreased most significantly in the month.

Vivian Cheung, Executive Director, Airport Operations of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) said, “HKIA’s traffic has been affected by multiple factors, including the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus in late January and social circumstances. We expect to see continued decline in traffic numbers in February as airlines have suspended flights and governments in different markets have implemented immigration restrictions and quarantine measures. The AA has stepped up cleaning and disinfection work in the terminal and passenger facilities, and continues to work closely with the Port Health Division of the Department of Health and our business partners regarding disease prevention work at the airport.”

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume and flight movements fell by 5.7% and 2.8% to 70.8 million and 416,445, respectively, while cargo throughput recorded 4.8 million tonnes, decreasing 6.6% year on year.

Hong Kong bars incoming Singapore Airlines flights over COVID-19 case

SINGAPORE, April 3 (Reuters) - Hong Kong has barred until mid-April incoming passenger flights from Singapore operated by Singapore Airlines, after an arriving passenger tested positive for COVID-19 infection.

Three passengers on the carrier's March 31 flight also failed to comply with disease precautions, Hong Kong authorities said on Friday.

Singapore Airlines confirmed the order but said passenger services from Hong Kong to Singapore would not be affected by the suspension, which runs until April 16.

A transit passenger on the SQ882 flight had a negative pre-departure test result, but subsequently tested positive on arrival in Hong Kong, the airline said.

"SIA has taken immediate steps to strengthen checks at the point of embarkation to ensure our customers are in compliance with Hong Kong’s regulatory requirements," it said in a statement.

Scoot flights from S'pore barred from landing in Hong Kong for 2 weeks after 2 Covid-19 cases detected

SINGAPORE - Budget carrier Scoot will not be allowed to fly passengers from Singapore to Hong Kong between April 16 and 29, after two passengers from one of its flights earlier this month were found to have Covid-19.

Its temporary ban by the Hong Kong authorities follows that of parent carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA), which is currently unable to fly passengers to the Chinese territory till April 17.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health in Hong Kong said in a statement on Thursday (April 15) that the Scoot flight TR980 flying into the city from Singapore on April 11 had two passengers confirmed to be infected with the Covid-19 virus.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. flew just 18,539 passengers in March -- a daily average of 598 and a slump of 94% from a year earlier -- as it continued to operate a very limited schedule compared with before the pandemic.

Passenger load factor fell 28 percentage points to 21.2% and capacity measured in available seat kilometers tumbled by 90%, the Hong Kong-based carrier said in a statement Friday. It carried 83,329 tons of cargo, down 30% from the previous March, though load factor improved to a record 86.4%, with strong demand from Northeast Asia and the Americas.

Flights from Singapore to Hong Kong have sold out after the relaunch of an air travel bubble slated to start on May 26 was announced.

This travel arrangement will finally allow long-delayed quarantine-free travel to take off between both cities.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Cathay Pacific Airways will operate the travel bubble flights, which will start with one flight a day in each direction, each capped at 200 passengers. Flights will be increased to twice a day from June 10.

Cathay Pacific Airways said on Tuesday (April 27) that its website saw more than a 10-fold increase in traffic on Monday (April 26).

"Seats on our air travel bubble flights are selling fast, while some of the flights are sold out," said its spokesman.

A Singapore Airlines (SIA) spokesman said the airline has also seen a strong demand for their air travel bubble flights but declined to reveal figures due to commercial sensitivity.

Airport Authority Signs Agreement on $400 Million Expansion of Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre

(HONG KONG, 27 April 2021) – To further enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong as an international aviation hub and in support of Hong Kong’s continuous development as the region’s premier centre for international businesses, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) is working with the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC) in the implementation of the latter’s HK$400 million expansion of business aircraft facilities at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

Jack So, Chairman of the AA and Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA, witnessed the signing of agreement on the HKBAC expansion project, together with the representatives of the key shareholders of HKBAC Ltd, Raymond Kwok, Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd, and Sir Michael Kadoorie, Director of HKBAC Ltd.

Mr So said, “The HKBAC expansion plan will help further attract global businesses to set up regional headquarters and offices in Hong Kong, taking advantage of HKIA’s unique geographical location and connectivity that enables business executives to reach major Asian markets within five hours.”

Under the expansion project, the site area of HKBAC in its existing location will be expanded by half from 16,000m² to 24,500m². The Executive Terminal of HKBAC will be expanded four times to 4,800m² and a new building will be added to provide more customer facilities, including enhanced Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities and a canopy for passengers at the apron. Other existing facilities, including the passenger lounge, air crew facilities and VIP lounge will also be enhanced. Upon completion of the expansion in 2025, the annual handling capacity of business aircraft flight movement at the HKBAC will be doubled.
