Sun Country reenters the St. Louis market.

Sun Country Airlines to land in St. Louis
06/26/18

Sun Country Airlines will launch nonstop service this fall from St. Louis to two Florida vacation destinations, the Eagan, Minn.-based discount carrier announced Tuesday.

The airline will fly Wednesdays and Saturdays to Ft. Myers, beginning Oct. 3, and to Tampa on Thursdays and Sundays, beginning Nov. 1.

The flights are currently scheduled through Jan. 7. Introductory fares are being offered as low as $74 one way, the airline said.

Southwest Airlines, the dominant passenger carrier serving St. Louis Lambert International Airport, currently offers one to four daily nonstop departures to Tampa and one to three daily nonstop departures to Fort Myers.

Sun Country Airlines, which initially focused on flying Minnesotans to Florida and Mexico, has changed hands several times and is currently controlled by Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm that is financing the airline’s expansion. Sun Country currently flies to 44 destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico and Costa Rica. As a low-cost airline, passengers pay fees for most carry-on baggage.

With the launching of new service to St. Louis, Sun Country becomes the 11th major passenger air carrier serving Lambert, and the second to launch operations here this year. WOW Air launched new international service between St. Louis and Reykjavik, Iceland, in May.

Dignitaries, politicians, CORTEX workers and citizens alike turned out today to celebrate the opening of the $14-million CORTEX MetroLink station. The station has been built next to Chouteau Greenway - one of St. Louis's many growing greenways.

It is the first light rail station for CORTEX - St. Louis's Innovation District and Community. Also, it is the first station on the entire system built with a public-private partnership.

And today, Silicon-Valley firm, Volley, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) firm, announced that it is opening an office in St. Louis. St. Louis is quietly building momentum with AI firms.

Currently Proposed or Under construction in (or nearby) CORTEX:
1. Crescent Labs. Facility for Washington University and other biotech firms.
2. An Aloft hotel
3. An office and lab building (proposed)
4. City Foundry -St. Louis
5. Westin Element Hotel
6. Armory site
7. SSM/St. Louis University's $550-million medical campus expansion
8. Microsoft Building (Innovation Hall) - recently opened

St. Louis is testing its new dominant skyblue and white transit livery; moving away from the red, white and blue livery as new inventory arrives.

Note: Public opinion, according to Metro (Bi-State), is that the public prefers the "Metro" livery over the "STL" livery.

Metro St. Louis can be very provincial, which is why I suspect the "STL" didn't poll favorably amongst locals.

The entire transit system - including MetroLink - covers 2 states, 3 counties and countless municipalities, villages, townships and unincorporated areas.

The entire system has recently undergone route changes/overhaul.

I am hella happy new transit/bus stop signs/identifiers will FINALLY replace the current "cut and paste/tape" signs.

MetroLink expansion moves forward in Illinois
The expansion is expected to cost at least $96 million and will be funded through Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois Plan

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill — The St. Clair County Transit District Board of Trustees has selected a company to oversee the extension of MetroLink to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.

Gonzalez Cos. will ensure the design and construction will stay on budget and on time for the 5.5-mile extension of the light rail system from the Shiloh-Scott MetroLink Station to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport in the Metro East. Officials are expected to select the design company next month, and the design process is slated to take nine to 12 months, said Ken Sharkey, managing director of the St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD).

The expansion is expected to cost at least $96 million and will be funded through Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois Plan that was approved in 2019. An access roadway connecting to Reider Road, and adjacent to the extension, also will be constructed.

The expansion could be operational by 2023, Sharkey said.

“We are excited to partner with local firm Gonzalez Cos. on this project,” Herb Simmons, chair of the St. Clair County Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “They bring years of light rail experience to the table and will serve in the project management oversight capacity during the design and construction phases to ensure continuity throughout the project build.”

Gonzalez Cos. is a civil engineering and construction management firm that has offices in Brentwood and Belleville, as well as Chicago and Louisville. It is led by Managing Principal and CEO Carlos Huddleston and Managing Principal and COO R. Patrick Judge.

Seriously? Throwing more money away at Mid-America airport?

Wasn't there at some point a plan to build a line into Madison county? 5.5 miles north from the Eads Bridge puts you downtown Granite City.

Pre-Covid, MidAmerica’s passenger count was steadily going up. It had approximately 304k last year. Obviously it’s way down this year though.

I do agree that a line out to Madison County would be nice, but Madison County doesn’t want it. They don’t take part in Metro at all and they run their own buses via Madison County Transit.

That's good, but that's like what Lambert got in a week. I'm not sure it changes the basic economics that STL is probably not enough of a traffic generator to justify two airports (although maybe the picture looked different when Lambert was a hub). Who knows, maybe Lambert will become a hub once again in the future and the airport's fortunes will change. If Breeze Airways actually launches, that might pump up traffic too.

Yeah, that's too bad. SIU-E especially could probably benefit from better transit.

The U.S.' Largest EV Bus Fleet Has Come To St. Louis

The new buses stretch 60 feet long and come with a price tag of $1.33 million each.

The entire fleet will be composed of electric-powered or other nonpolluting buses by 2045.

Metro Transit launched a fleet of 18 electric battery-powered buses on Tuesday.

The zero-emission vehicles will be running on the No. 70 Grand MetroBus route, spanning from north to south of the city.

“This initial group of 18 battery electric buses is the first step in moving in the right direction as we work together to build a healthier city, as well as a healthier region and better transit experiences for residents, businesses and visitors,” Mayor Tishaura Jones said.

The fleet consists of 14 buses 60 feet in length and four smaller vehicles, each about 40 feet long.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, transit officials say the vehicles will offer bus riders a smoother and quieter experience. Source

MidAmerica St. Louis Airport is adding an addition that will nearly double its footprint to serve a large increase in travelers using the airport.

Airport figures reveal there is a 376 percent increase in MidAmerica travelers from 2015-2019.

The airport’s projected volume for 2021 is more than 340,000 travelers.

The $30 million construction project is adding 41,000 square feet to the 53,000-square-foot airport in Mascoutah, IL that opened in 1997.

Rumors are that there will be new and expanded service for existing and newcomer airlines such as a Allegiant and Breeze.
