.

Here I am in July 1971 trying to lift one of the foam boulders.

It was heavy. . .for foam.

And with a huge pair of scissors.

Were they taken with this camera?

IANN

Those things on the wall on the left? Some of them look like handprints perhaps?

In this GIF from Land of the Giants, the camera looks quite the same, with a couple differences...

Yep, that's it, M-P.

Here's my mom and dad with the camera.

July 1971

And here we are with the giant light switch and electrical outlet.

July 1971

My dad couldn't center a photograph if his life depended on it.

...The person cut-in-half on the left is my poor sister.

There is a group of 108 photographs from the 1910s currently on eBay.

Here are a few examples.

Pasadena: Tournament of Roses Parade 1911 with Castle Green in the background; crowded street scene.

Link

Link

Does anyone recognize the building on the float? ....It almost looks like the White House.

Lookout Mountain Drive, Laurel Canyon, Hollywood: aerial view, Wulffs Peak, mountains, etc.

Link

This is a wonderful photograph.

Catalina Island: very early, pre-1915 fire, pre-casino; Avalon, Sugar Loaf Rock, harbor, street scenes.

Link

Amazing photograph. That's the widest dirt street that I've ever seen.

Mar. 16, 1911 train wreck on Kite Shaped Track near Glendale (or Edendale, writing hard to make out)

Link

I wonder if the people are passengers or looky-loos?

The bids are flying fast and the total (for the group of 108 photos) is up to $321.00

Check out the other photographs Here..(be forewarned / they're frustratingly small)

This looks like a low-speed headon collision, and the Santa Fe mainline heading north out of Los Angeles was single-track for much of its route, but it went through Highland Park and South Pasadena instead of Edendale or Glendale.

I didn't have any better luck reading the handwriting on the print, so a mystery it remains.

Great photo! The building on the float is Glendale High School and I'm just assuming it's on the City of Glendale float.

You piqued my interest, Mackerm.

It took me several days but I believe I finally found the exact location of 'Old Man Rock'. (I hope he's still there!)

GNIS...(California Geographic Names System) ...Page 804

The page was scanned sideways & it was difficult to figure out how to post it.

The following three sections should be side by side but. . .I had to post them vertically.

I placed a red arrow at the Old Man Rock column

It's described as a pillar. . .and the coordinates are on the right.

um. . .that's all well and good. . .but I don't know how to use 'coordinates' to find a location.

I stuck in decimals and got 40.2306n 122.4957w which is indeed a spot in California, but not in Los Angeles county. Thanks for trying. I put it on a Facebook page as planned, but it ain't gonna get many views. Probably gonna have to find a hiking forum.

Couldn't find the specifics I wanted, e_r; but it's worth noting that as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to have been mentioned as being actually seen since 1936. Here, chronologically, are some gleanings from my search, among which are some faint clues as to location:

LA Times, 9/1/1910.

Here's the whole related chunk of the Holcomb article mentioned by Mackerm:

Popular Astronomy, v. 22, p. 471, 1914.

LA Times, 11/27/1932.

LA Times, 4/5/1936.

The funny thing is that I've hiked all the way up to Mt. Wilson at least twice, and so must have walked past the turn-off trail to the formation each time! Even if it has weathered and fallen apart (or been chipped up unrecognizably by vandals), it would be interesting to see what the remains look like now.

I hiked up to Mt. Wilson too from Sierra Madre when I was about 18 (51 years ago). Never saw old man rock or heard about it. From all the cracks and fissures, it may have broken apart years ago. In winter, ice gets into the cracks and expands, and pieces can fall off. Erosion by ice wedging. When you hiked up, did you take the Mt. Wilson trail in Sierra Madre that goes by Orchard Camp, or start up the Mt. Wilson toll road (easier)? I took the trail with a Sierra Club group and it is a hard climb! The guide never mentioned old man rock so maybe it is far from the trail.

Hail, fellow hiker!

CaliNative, I took the Sierra Madre trail. I did it on December 31, 1969. If I recall correctly, very near the summit, it joins the toll road's path.

Me, near the bottom of the trail:

Me, at the top:

The Old Man Rock's site, as far as I can guess, would have been in the canyon straight down directly behind me.
