FARGO | Dakota Place (Block 9) | 232 FT | 18 FLOORS

Proposed $125M skyscraper for downtown Fargo would be North Dakota’s tallest building

By Eric Burgess

FARGO - Doug Burgum hopes to fill a “gaping hole” in downtown here by constructing the state’s tallest building, a $125 million private project the prominent developer envisions dovetailing with up to three pending public projects that could tap tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer money.

Kilbourne Group, a firm owned by Burgum that has bought and renovated several downtown buildings in the past dozen years, has for years been open about wanting to build a multi-use tower on the US Bank Plaza on Broadway between Second and Third avenues north.

But Burgum recently told The Forum he’s an anchor tenant away from going ahead with the 23-story building with a working moniker of “Dakota Place.”

Interesting. I looked at the block and it's mainly parking lot, with a smaller bank building in one part. It's very underutilized for being smack in the middle of Downtown. Hopefully some fracking money makes it to this part of the state.

Just for some background...the man behind this plan is used to doing some pretty huge things. Doug Burgum was the founder of Great Plains Software, which he built up by literally betting the family farm on it and then taking it to over 1,000 employees until selling it to Microsoft for what was then the biggest acquisition they made ($1.1 billion). After leaving Microsoft, he founded Kilbourne Group and made the revitalization of downtown Fargo his passion. Kilbourne has several properties that they have rehabilitated downtown, so this is not some fly by night developer...actually this is someone whose passion is downtown and this is his signature project.

That's pretty cool. Their tallest now is just 206 feet, so that will be a significant amount taller.

The current state's tallest is the State Capitol in Bismarck. Any other cases where a state's tallest building is the capitol?
