I don't know what's worse... what the words are saying or that train wreck of a graphic. Center spaced bullet points... Someone should have their hands cut off for that.

I've read some stupid things, and this easily qualifies for top-tier status.

Actually I just read the rest of them and they all qualify.

How about the 40 “stunning” buildings that are important to New York City’s culture? Somebody either wrote that with a straight face, meaning they should be locked away. Or they went into a fit of laughter.

Lol at the losing 40 stunning buildings that are culturally important to NYC.

Losing this will be devastating. Even worse than the original Penn Station, especially losing the A&H Deli!

Shadows that reach NJ? Have they seen Hudson Yards? Or the rest of Midtown...

Wow. That’s some stunning stuff right there. Don’t even get me started on the shadows.

More scaremongering from the Times…pure fantasy.

Towering Over Midtown: The Penn Station Super-Talls
The proposed project would include buildings in the West 30s that would be among the tallest worldwide, with one tower that could surpass One World Trade.

By Matthew Haag
August 30, 2022

Quote:
Gov. Kathy Hochul is betting on a legacy-defining project that would transform Midtown Manhattan with 10 new towers surrounding Penn Station, the busiest transit hub in North America and possibly the most roundly disliked. The project will take about two decades to complete, with the last building opening in 2044, the state said.

There is a lot we still don’t know about the development, including the buildings’ exact dimensions, but New York State says they will not have a height limit except on one site. Fortunately, the state has published a few renderings of the site, with the towers drawn to scale to how they could be built, so we can extrapolate possible heights.
Quote:
Eight of the 10 towers would rise more than 1,000 feet, all of them located east of Eighth Avenue. Two buildings that would be on the west side of Eighth Avenue, just south of the new Moynihan Trail Hall, would be far shorter, between 400 and 875 feet tall. Those two buildings would house most of the residential units included in the project.

The other eight buildings would be huge, even by Manhattan standards, and would rank among the tallest not just in the city but in all of the United States. By my calculation (using Photoshop’s handy Ruler Tool), the tallest would be Site 7, stretching skyward about 1,900 feet, at Seventh Avenue between West 32nd and West 33rd Streets. That would be taller than One World Trade, currently the tallest building in the city, at 1,776 feet, a nod to the year when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Quote:
Site 7 would be almost entirely offices, and the property is owned by Vornado Realty Trust, a publicly traded company that owns another four properties that would be redeveloped. If it reaches 1,900 feet, Site 7 would be the fifth-tallest in the world and the tallest outside Asia and the Middle East, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Two other huge buildings would be built just south of Penn Station, on West 31st Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The farthest east building on that block, known as Site 2B, could reach 1,725 feet tall. That building would also have nearly 2.9 million square feet of space, nearly all of it dedicated to offices, making it bigger than the nearby Empire State Building.
Quote:
What are the tallest buildings in New York City? Here are the city’s five tallest towers in the office and residential categories, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Office

1. One World Trade, 1,776 feet. (Sixth-tallest overall in the world.)

2. One Vanderbilt, 1,400 feet

3. 30 Hudson Yards, 1,270 feet.

4. Empire State Building, 1,250 feet.

5. Bank of America Tower, 1,200 feet.

Residential

1. Central Park Tower, 1,550 feet. (Sixth-tallest residential building in the world.)

2. 111 West 57th, 1,428 feet.

3. 432 Park Avenue, 1,396 feet.

4. 53 West 53rd, 1,050 feet.

5. One57, 1,004 feet.

Scaremongering or not... this is a big tease. 8 out of 10 over 300m, and one of them taller than 1 WTC. This is a tease!

If anything, its bad for mental health because when folks like us read this, the ego wants this to be exact reality. But if its not, sadness occurs.

I know. The problem is, even some people on this forum, who should know better, are gonna read that and get excited, not realizing that it’s just something written by someone who doesn’t have the smallest clue about the subject matter. SMH.

Great... now this guy has me wanting a 1,900 ft building in NYC.

Also Central Park Tower is the tallest residential building in the world, not the sixth tallest.

^ Well, the guy thinks 15 Penn will be about 1,900 ft. Even a little light research would have given him a more accurate picture. But that wouldn’t fit the “attack of the supertalls” narrative. Not scary enough.

NYC protesters hold ‘funeral’ for buildings Hochul plans to raze near Penn Station for donor Steve Roth

By David Meyer
August 30, 2022

Quote:
Over 100 protesters held a mock funeral Tuesday for the buildings Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to demolish around Penn Station to make way for a campaign donor’s new office towers.

The demonstrators staged 50 coffins on the steps of the James A. Farley Building on Eighth Avenue — across the street from the transit hub — to represent the “ghosts” of the dozens of homes and historic buildings set for demolition under the plan.

“These are the addresses of the remaining buildings that will be torn down, they are before you in these coffins,” Alison Greenberg of the Historic Districts Council told attendees.

“We don’t mock death and we don’t take it lightly, but this is serious,” Greenberg said. “These buildings are serious and what is happening here is very, very serious.”

Where on earth are they getting those numbers?

I freaking wish, it's time for NY to outdo itself... again.

He's probally looking at the max theoretical potential. I believe some of those sites don't have a max height limit as well, only bounded by FAR... so in theory... 600m+ could rise.

But yeah its a bit immature on the authors part to speculate the max of anything. Like NYGuy was saying, likely to scare and trigger the NIMBYs.

He just took the graphics, which were skewed, and stretched them out. But he went too far. And this was in the New York Times. All involved should be embarrased. I would expect better from a fifth-grader.

And it was simply unnecessary, because the state provided numbers to go with the graphics, which themselves are hypothetical. The information was there. The fact that someone would take a graphic and draw their own drastic numbers shows you how far the opposition will go. But that’s good. Because this shows you where the issue really stands. It’s not about the preservation of a “neighborhood”, or some landmark worthy structures. As always, it’s about the skyscrapers. Always remember that when they get on their soapbox.

Lol.

Some people who live near Penn Station are angry about a proposed project that would transform their neighborhood.

Some people are angry about everything. Who cares? Those assholes can move if they don’t like it. Get out of midtown, and move to someplace where nothing ever happens.

I guarantee that the overwhelming majority of them live in rent-controlled apartments, don’t work, and live off the overly-generous NYC dole, which is funded by productive New Yorkers.
