Looks like they are going backward on this. Ouch. Anyone know the story?

That's super weird. That eastern masonry wall was new, correct? Wonder why they took it down.

So much graffiti the weight pulled the wall down! JK I don't know. But they will have just about replaced every single piece of that building soon.

Activists Take Over Former Weiss Hospital Parking Lot To Stop Controversial Apartment Development
Activists have lived in the parking lot since Sunday as they seek to stop a 314-unit apartment complex slated to come to the former Weiss Hospital property.
https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/08...t-development/

Quote:
UPTOWN — The site of a controversial Uptown apartment project is now the temporary home of neighbors and housing activists who are occupying the property in an effort to thwart the development.

With work on the project seemingly imminent, neighbors and activists are occupying the former Weiss Hospital parking lot at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Marine Drive around-the-clock in an effort to stymie the development. Weeks ago, the parking lot was cleared of cars and prepped for construction of a 314-unit apartment complex that has drawn the ire of some in the neighborhood, they said.

About a half-dozen people have spent the past three nights sleeping in tents in the parking lot. Many more are at the site during the day, with neighborhood groups offering mutual aid at the site, including free food, clothing and medical supplies.

The activists said they will remain until their demand that Weiss’ new owner buy back the parking lot is met or until they are forcibly removed.
JFC, it's time to move on folks

“Uptown doesn’t need any more luxury housing. Poor, elderly and homeless people are being pushed out systemically.”

No one his being pushed out for this development. Low cost housing is not being replaced with high cost housing. Its literally being built on non residential land that is vacant. However, if this project isn't allowed to go through, people literally will be displaced. The demand to live in Uptown will instead find other ways to move in, via deconversions from multi family to SFH or landlords remodeling units as of right and raising rents.

Also, why only 12 stories? This is a prime parcel with guaranteed lake views on two sides and park access. I assume that they did not want to go to the council or local alderman to request a zoning increase?

They got a zoning change, but it took two years and 50+ community meetings. I'm surprised it wasn't cut down to 9 stories by the end.

People were already raging over "displacement" so I assume a high-rise here would have been too much to pass the NIMBY brigade.

Both images are looking west with the 360 Green construction site pictured in the foreground.

Nobody's forcing you to eat there. Personally I welcome some affordable food options near the ballpark, especially if they are urban-format.

The market here is families getting an inexpensive meal before the game, or late-night people getting drunk food. Will Chik-Fil-A close at midnight on Saturdays to honor the Lord's Day? Big missed opportunity LOL

Chick fil A is alright, for a chain.

Culver's on the other hand is downright amazing. I wish they would open one up on the Near West Side by me. Until then, Red Hot Ranch will remain my calorie busting guilty pleasure.

I remember reading about that building getting demo'd. What a shame. We really like to crap all over our history in this town all too often.

Yeah, but custard? I mean seriously what do people see in custard? Is that just me?
