Thanks for the link to that video of the Dodger Stadium ski jump, riichkay!
I see it took place in October, which can be one of the hottest months of the year! The announcer at the beginning mentioned they couldn't be stopped by "nationwide droughts" and an "extended Indian summer." The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh?

And don't forget the NHL Hockey game on January 25, 2014! A week before, the high temps were in the 80's. The high that day was 77° and at game time it was 63°.

This event was the first time any stadium used the large DIAMONDVISION screen in the ballpark. Looks rather quaint now, at the time it was revolutionary.

This year it is being held next Tuesday, July 19, 2022, after being postponed from 2020. I'm not sure why it was postponed two years, but this year is 42 years from 1980 and 42 is a number every baseball fan knows. July 19, 2022, also happens to be Rachel Robinson's 100th Birthday! There has been no mention of this that I have noted anywhere. Maybe they are planning something with that in mind for that day. She did appear at Dodger Stadium on Jackie Robinson day this past April, and hopefully she will be able to again next week! That would be pretty special.

Bristolian is correct. The game was postponed in 2020 because of covid, raging in L.A. with the vaccines still in the future. I think the hospital ship may still have been docked in L.A. Harbor.

I remember watching that 1980 All Star game on ABC. One of my clear memories (I was 28) was Howard Cosell snidely saying that "Manhattan has more tall buildings in a single block than all of DTLA" to paraphrase him, when they had an aerial shot of DTLA from the Goodyear blimp. Thst may have been almost factually correct in 1980 (L.A. had just 5 buildings over 50 stories in 1980* and a few more over 40) , but it seemed an unnecessary putdown. Cosell didn't like L.A. I suppose. Maybe he was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Maybe they have that clip of Howard saying that DTLA putdown on youtube. I bet Hoss or Martin could find it

On June 17th I posted about the Tail o' the Pup soon to be reopening at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood.

For a few hours last Friday evening the place had a soft opening to test everything out.

Tail o' the Pup is having a Grand Reopening tomorrow, July 20, 2022, with new extended hours from 11am to 10pm!

I saw that there's a couple youtube videos of the entire 1980 All-Star Game in Los Angeles and so I looked for what you were talking about.

There's two interesting things. The one you spoke of begins at 37:12. Before he says the quote you paraphrased, when they first show
the skyline shot Howard Cosell says: "Pretty isn't it?"

At the 1:16:47 mark the skyline is shown again and the other broadcaster (Keith Jackson, I believe) makes a factual, perhaps, but snide, IMO, comment of his own.

My clue here was when I recognized the blade sign of the Panama Hotel at 403 E 5th Street. That means we're looking towards DTLA from around San Pedro Street. The different lens used by GSV makes it difficult to get a similar "now" view, but here's one showing the extant building and sign.

Thanks Martin. Knew you could find it. Cosell (& Jackson?) putdown of DTLA still irritates me a bit 42 years later, although there was some truth in his remarks. L..A. Skyline is now too powerful to mock. By the Olympics should even be more awesome

The all Stars game in 1980 & dt makes me think of how the hollywood industry didn't have alot to work with in the past, when dtla was still fairly anonymous....back when urban cores throughout the US were going downward & the burbs were gaining all the importance.

I believe the former twin towers of the Arco company...dated from 1971, 1972....were still under construction when this promo was filmed. This was at least 4 or 5 yrs before other bench line properties in dtla like the bonaventure hotel were built. It was designed by a guy from Atlanta who created similar type hotels...known for lobbies hundreds of ft tall (the bonaventure's lobby, however, was much shorter)...throughout various American cities. I read an article from over 45 yrs ago where he at the time said that everyone looked up to SF & implied the same wasn't true of LA.

It has been quite a while since I've posted here but this shot stirred me a bit.
It's from Science Fiction Theater's 'Beam of Fire' (1955). It's supposed to be the hotel where some Secret Service men chose to stay as if it were a normal type of hotel in1955. It looks much older of course but maybe by only thirty or fourty years or so.
Does anyone recognize it as being in Los Angeles? If it is, it must appear in some other shots here. The name on the sign is too blurred to read.

We've seen the Panama Hotel a few times before on NLA, but not from this angle.

Well done Hoss! I knew it wouldn't take you long. I looked up the previous appearances of the Panama Hotel on NLA and in every one the area looks smaller and somehow less gritty than it does in the Dragnet screenshot. It might just be the imposing skyscrapers in the distance that are not seen from other angles.

Water and Power Associates Original is on LAPL, but to me the Water & Power version is SLIGHTLY clearer.

This is driving me bats. I should be able to figure this out, but it ain't happening. I did work out that the small square sign has a Route 11 symbol.. Martin Turnbull recently posted this elsewhere.
