It is a chimney JMR.

I'm sure it used to be a much taller chimney, but it's been truncated and a 'gable' has been built over the top.

Many chimneys have been lost due to earthquake damage.

It turns out that this photo is from a book I believe the title of is
Ultramodern Roadside Architecture by Alan Hess.

Here's a couple other photos from it.

6776 Hollywood Blvd.:

In that long ago summer of 1952...the Red Car Trolley Line ran the length of Hollywood Boulevard,
and near the corner of Highland was the all-night Hollywood Theater. A few doors away, you could
get breakfast any time of the day at Coffee Dan's or Aldo's.

1511 Vine Street:

Fred Darian entered onto the scene as an ambitious singer, working as an overnight fry cook at Coffee Dan’s restaurant on Vine Street;
making the rounds during the days, (He had success singing on television, movies, writing music and recording some songs.)

"I met Sammy Davis Jr. when we were kids. We used to hang around in Hollywood at the Coffee Dan's on Vine Strreet."

I don't recall hearing about Aldo's previously.

There were two locations for Aldo's: 6413 and 6721 Hollywood Blvd.
The 6721 address is the one that Robert Vaughn referred to. Haven't found
any period photographs of it. It's east of the Pickwick Bookstore location, across
from the Egyptian Theatre. That address is currently a Sushi restaurant.

The 6413 address is between Wilcox and Cahuenga, in a building to the right of the
Warner Bros. Theatre building. At some point before Aldo's it was the Weiss Viennese Cafe.
In a book, Cher revealed that she met Sonny Bono at Aldo's (in 1962) and mentioned it was
next to KFWB Radio station.

This 1949 image of the Warner Bros. Theatre location shows this building to the right of it in an aerial.

Hollywood Historic Photos

This 1972 image shows the KFWB location and the address for KFWB as 6419.
Aldo's could be one of the other locations in this same building or possibly just to the
right in the next building. I do not know how long Aldo's was in business, though.

Hollywood Photographs

I do know that currently there is no building there:

And here's the same view today.

Is it just me, or did the front yards get larger?

I realize they would have had to narrow the street.....but I can't think of any other

The yards are not deeper
What you see is the effect of the infernal phone/camera- or the similar overly wide angle lens of Street View
A tip off is the leaning-in of perimeter objects, like the house on the right and the lamp post
I despise wide angle lenses used in this way

It looks like the Thriller House at 1345 Carroll Avenue, although that means the eBay images have been flipped.

GSV

There's more on the house in the movies at iamnotastalker.com

Thanks Hoss, no wonder I couldn't find it.

Here's the image flipped.

eBay

I think they saved this house in the nick of time.

While you're searching Hoss, here's another one I haven't located yet.

Angelino Heights 1970s / eBay

I had to flip this one as well.

a bit larger.

detail

I spy a Wig-Wag, Jack.

I'd really like to know what it says above this entry gateway (circled below). At first I thought it might be an entrance to a parking lot behind the P.E. station,
but on closer inspection I see two steps in the entryway.

Rebel's Cocktails to the right of the circle looks like a fairly noirish place to have a vodka gimlet.

Still standing is the LADWP Harbor Generating Station. It's visible in the background above the streetcar on the right side of the picture. It's currently being refurbished for many more years of service.

Thanks for the information VC351W.

I believe this is the building in 1948.

It's really impressive. I'd say it was built to last.

Kind of a strange evolution. A DESI is a hip modern person from India.

That's 1329 Carroll Ave., the Innes House. (And more stained glass!)

Me, 2014

Strangely enough, the empty lot next door, whose original home was demolished in 1970, has since been filled by another Victorian - the Irey House, which was moved from 1123 Court Street to 1325 Carroll Ave. in 1978. It was still lingering, as it has for many years, in a half-restored state as of July 2015 according to Google Street View.

When I first went to Pasadena in 1954, KFWB was the rock n'roll station all the kids tuned into, with the "Swingin' 7 DJs of KFWB."

Thanks for the old KFWB ads. I like the list of 1961 Top Tunes. I played some of my old favs....all are on YouTube. Haven't heard them in many decades.

Such times seem more simple. Nostalgia for sure.

'mystery' location

Two images from the same unknown block.

eBay

In this slide you get a better view of the distinctive building in the background. (but the sign at top is still indecipherable) ....I think it's marred by graffiti.

eBay

I believe the building behind the bus is having it's windows blocked over. (they have one row of blocks along the top left to go)
