man, development has really killed the High Line! who wants to walk through a claustrophobia-inducing canyon of overpriced, poorly designed (largely empty) condos--for that matter who on earth wants to live tourist-eyeball-level on that stretch anyway?

it was for a very brief time a pleasant elevated park, now it is just a consumerist feeder tube into the glass shithole of HY

yeah the majority of the day for sure.

however, it is still nice early or late in the day during the week.

also, i walked it home last night after work in between a little rain and had it to myself.

^^ I wholeheartedly disagree. It is a diverse showcase of a unique cluster of architecture unlike anywhere else in the world. If you want shadowless park space, go to Sheep Meadow in Central Park or just about any other park in the USA. The High-Line is an incredibly unique experience, which just keeps getting better. Looking forward to my next visit there.

If you expected empty lots, in the middle of residential zones, then your pessimism is clearly an emotional response, as opposed to one of logic and common sense. This is NYC, and you think these relatively short towers are oppressive? Have you been to any other part of NYC? Your response is baffling and... dumb.

You do realize that was the whole point, right? In exchange for saving the High Line, the development rights were transferred to the adjacent lots, and those lots were intentionally zoned to create a canyon along the right-of way.

And, um, "who wants to walk there"? The problem with the High Line is it's too damn popular. You can't move.

Not sure why you think the residences are "poorly designed", as they're almost all extreme high end and probably the largest concentration of starchitecture on the planet. They also aren't "largely empty" and sell at crazy prices, indicating plenty of people desire such residences.

I'd live there in a second, but I can't afford it. And I'm pretty close to the 1%. Arguably the best K-12 private school in Manhattan is right there.

^ and that school is quite a sight in and of itself. crazy limos, suvs, etc. and classic suited chauffeurs and nannies waiting out front at the end of the school day. and a block away a legion of opioid zombies staggering around. its really something else around there.

I never quite understand why people complain about the High Line, and the development around it. Do people really think that once torn down, the area was going to remain the same? Probably would have been rezoned for denser development. But such as it is, I think it's succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. I recently took a trip down Atlanta's Beltline, and on every side there is similar growth. Also, like the High Line, very crowded. That means people lije it, and want to be there. Same thing applies to the High Line. So whenever I hear or see those comments from people about it being an undesirable place/experience, my eyes roll back in my head a little. Does it get crowded? You bet. Does New York City get crowded? You betcha.

also, the 18th street plaza, the final development of the high line park itself i think, is underway below w18th street.


18TH ST. PLAZA
Currently under design, the 18th St. Plaza will be located at street level, along 10th Ave. The 10,000 square foot site will feature a large, curving planting bed with low plantings and trees. A billboard anchors the site to the north and will be repurposed to display art, and a new stair and elevator to the High Line will be constructed with the plaza.

Brookfield Properties Stands to Gain from High Line Extension to Manhattan West

The $60 million project would connect an existing High Line stub at 30th Street and 10th Avenue one block to the pedestrian plaza at Manhattan West, Brookfield’s massive, mixed-use development.

Brookfield is teaming up with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Empire State Development and the Friends of the High Line to construct the L-shaped connection from 30th Street, near where the High Line enters The Shops at Hudson Yards, to Brookfield’s elevated public space mid-block between West 31st and West 33rd streets and Ninth and 10th avenues.

While it’s unclear how much of the construction cost Brookfield is covering, the real estate investment trust will certainly benefit from the project, which will direct the High Line’s typical flood of tourists to its 240,000 square feet of retail at Manhattan West. This effort will be the first of two planned High Line extensions. The second one will extend the current High Line terminus from 34th Street and 12th Avenue past the Javits Center to Pier 76, an NYPD tow pound that will eventually become part of Hudson River Park. The current iteration of the High Line — formerly an abandoned elevated freight rail track — runs 1.45 miles from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to just south of the Javits Center.
