This thread is amazing. I'll be in Houston for the first time this weekend and have added like 2 places to my itinerary just from seeing them here (had never heard of the Rienzi!).

At least the 747 beneath it is the genuine article! I like the elevator access structure too.

One afternoon, some thirty or more years ago, I stepped out the back of the business in the Montrose area where I was working, and that 747 with a (real) Shuttle on top flew over at a low altitude. I had no idea it was in town... most likely on a ferrying trip between California and Florida... but felt incredibly luck to have chosen that moment to go outside.

The original completion date for the Houston Museum of Natural Science is incorrect. I know Wikipedia says 1969, but the Museum’s website and even the sources sited in the Wikipedia article all have 1964 as the original completion date. I looked it up because I remember my older sister going to the planetarium with her school and I knew ‘69 had to be wrong because our family moved away from Houston in 1966.
