Very sad, but true. They stepped up their game with the JW, Marriott & Aloft/Element. But they don't do residential/hotel mixed use projects that would make for nice towers.

1) Calling Brush Square a "park" in its current configuration is a bit of a stretch.

2) If the rumors are true and this becomes an Autograph Collection it could end up being pretty nice. Hey, at least it wouldn't be another vertically stretched highway hotel like the Fairfield or HGI.

At Fifth and Trinity, a Downtown Austin Tower Plan Hits an Invisible Wall

https://austin.towers.net/at-fifth-a...nvisible-wall/

The hotel tower planned at the southwest corner of East Fifth and Trinity Streets in downtown Austin by prolific local hospitality developers White Lodging will contain 260 rooms in a 13-story building, according to recent city documents. The quarter-block site now preparing for development includes neighboring tracts at 307 and 311 East Fifth Street, occupied respectively by downtown restaurant Russian House — sorry, it’s actually just “House” now — and the defunct event venue Trinity Hall, which will both need to be demolished prior to the new hotel’s construction. (The House formerly known as Russian House plans to reestablish itself in a new location.)

Find the plans for the park.... they exist and will happen.

I'm glad there's a reason that the tower will be so skimpy . . . not just White Lodging obstinacy.

It's an Autograph by Marriott. The height has to be estimated. Here are some elevations:

This project has gone quiet, can anyone determine if it will be moving forward, especially with the passing of Bruce White recently?

Based on site plan updates, it's moving along like any typical site plan.

I would say, broadly, that the death of Bruce White shouldn’t impede his company’s development plans at all. They’re big enough that even without him the building should continue without pause.

Yep. it's hard to get excited about a building that I wouldn't have been excited about if it was announced pre building boom of the 80s.

I agree, though this specific site has a lot of limitations due to Brush Square Park across the street.

The Towers article posted above by ATX has an explanation on the restrictions on this site. I generally don't mind *some* setbacks because I've seen plenty of examples of why they can be useful....but they can be (and are often) oppressive and counterproductive. This is a prime example of the latter.

Dare i say: I’m not as opposed to short towers lately. alot of the proposals i feel are so generic in comparison to other large cities where the towers are so much more interesting or at least timeless. I can certainly be patient to see other tall towers come later that are incredible. But in this current design phase, Seems like the only time we finally get somthing gorgeous proposed it gets valued engineered into another boring Lego block…at least i wont have to see this one poking out above the skyline
