Although NYC has the most companies in the Fortune500, none of the NYC companies are in the top 10, two are in the top 20 (JP Morgan Chase and Verizon), and only 7 or 8 are in the top 50.

It's by metro area, so Johnson & Johnson (#8) would count towards NYC.

SF/SJ certainly have the largest by market cap but I don't think there are enough large market cap companies to overtake NYC.

Fortune 1000

Bay Area ( SF + San Jose + Santa Clara) = 46

Houston metro ( Houston + Spring) = 40

Dallas metro (Dallas + Irving) = 30

I would imagine Houston numbers increase the next few years then start dropping precipitously in the 2030s if not late 2020s.

Philadelphia has 6 Fortune 1000s in the city limits, so Diamondpark was slightly off.

Still, your point stands. Philadelphia city limits has an awful business tax structure. Despite constant pressure from Philadelphia business leaders to change the tax structure, Philadelphia City Council is so thick-headed and uninterested it’s gross.

There are 35 fortune 1000 companies in the Philadelphia metro in 2022, and only 6 are in the city. Missed opportunity much?

There's an mixed use development called Las Colinas, that has attracted HQs for decades, plus its close to the DFW airport.

It still is by far the corporate center for entertainment.

Omaha punched above its weight at 7. How many of those are related to Berkshire Hathaway, I wonder?

At this point Fortune 500 city lists is now just a game of luring other cities'/states’ headquarters with cash and tax incentives. It’s not even real anymore. Companies avoiding taxes by relocating like 2% of their company. It’s paper.

Sort of like this HQ move by Raytheon to Northern VA from Mass.? The article says that no reduction in Mass. employees would result but it still made big headlines.

It just made sense for them to finally combine everything in Springwood. That facility was built to combine all of the older legacy Exxon offices already in Houston with all of the functions that were still being done at the old legacy Mobil HQ in Fairfax, VA. They started moving everyone from Fairfax to Houston about a decade ago. I call it the XOM Mothership. It's a pretty impressive campus to see even from the road...because it's not easy to get on it. It's highly secured.

Or Boeing, which relocates its headquarters every minute like they’re the Rams. Remember when Chicago thought that was a big deal?

I mean there are some legit business hubs with large corporate presences that are far more than just a few hundred employees.

But, if most employees, including top executives, are working from home (or some place other than the office) most of the time, how much does a corporate HQ really matter in this day and age? Seems like it is mostly bragging rights for the location in question.

Well...the current mayor has already checked out...so don't expect him do anything and the Council is not the brightest bunch either. For the city to charge a higher tax rate on commerical property than it does on residential which has been advocated by commercial property owners, it needs Harrisburg to approve it which the GOP controlled legislature hasn't bother to even take up. The whole city tax code needs to be torn up and rewritten but I doubt it will happen in our life time.

Upsetting that San Antonio ranks higher than Austin?

I think time will tell how much of a shift occurs. However, the 2022 list still follows relatively recent patterns. NYC, Bay Area, DFW, Houston, Chicago and ATL are major corporate hubs with lots of white collar workers.
