Duluth and the North Shore

About a month ago, my wife and I took a long weekend, rented a car, and drove to Duluth as a sort of babymoon.

Here are some pictures of Duluth (not necessarily in order... and not always great light).

And the North Shore:

I've always been fascinated with Duluth and the whole Lake Superior area in general.

Thanks for the photos

Kinda reminds me of Portland, ME... would that be an off-base comparison?

Enjoyed your photos. What is the prominent new skyscraper under construction in some of your photos? Duluth is finally getting a skyscraper in their skyline!

Looks to be some sort of hospital building, not sure if it qualifies as a skyscraper!

edit: more info, seems it didn't top off too long after I was there. 340 ft tall measured from the lowest point. https://www.duluthnewstribune.com/ne...sion-Northland

I see you got up close and personal with American Integrity.

NICE!

there are only 13 thousand footers on the great lakes, and as the main taconite loading harbor on the lakes, Duluth is their most frequent port of call, so it's easily one of the best boat nerd cities on the lakes.

I've never been to Portland ME so I can't really say, but it certainly has New Englandy maritime vibes.

Yeah, got very lucky there (we didn't check the schedule or anything). We were walking along the Lakewalk and were thinking that the big boat was coming in quick, and got to the bridge just as it was approaching. Pretty cool experience!

I feel bad for the people who live across the bridge though... that bridge goes up for a long time!

Great tour!

Looks like that hospital tower is the city's new tallest. The previous tallest held the title for 121 years. Pretty crazy.

awesome to see duluth again and very nice pix!

we enjoyed our visit in 2015.

funny to imagine in a place like duluth, but it was 100 degree heatwave everyday we were there -- thx global warming!

The natural scenery looks gorgeous, but Duluth doesn't look like much to write home about. Kind of get a PNW vibe with the hills meeting with water. A scaled down Portland, OR.

Nice pictures!

I like that blue lift bridge!

Another ship from Delaware! It seems like any time someone posts a picture of a laker, it's from Wilmington. I see ships from Wilmington all the time in the Welland Canal.

It's registered in Delaware, presumably for tax reasons, but I'm pretty sure it can't physically make it there since it won't fit in the Seaway locks...

Correct.

Most (all?) US great lakes ships are registered in Delaware for tax purposes, even though they have absolutely nothing to do with Delaware, and have never and will never visit Delaware ports. It's one of the most classic tax dodges out there.

And yes, as one of the 13 thousand footers on the great lakes, American Integrity is too big to fit through the Welland canal/seaway locks (740' Max ship length), and thus her hull will never taste salt water (and last decades longer because of it). She and her 12 super-ship sisters are forever "locked" in the 4 upper great lakes.
