Is it a support for a large sign (now gone) or a remnant of an old radio tower?
It's atop this building at 12th and Grand, whose possible plight was highlighted by GW earlier this year.

You're right, Hoss-- my first thought was the Bendix building a few blocks east on 12th. I hadn't thought before about there being two similar towers on 12th St, once both with lettering ending in "ix"...

We first saw the Bendix building in ER's post of August 28, 2009.

The Bendix Aviation Corporation at Maple and 12th Street.
The tower on top was a nighttime aid for aviation.
The tower stands 150 ft. The letter B is 25 feet tall and 16 feet wide.

I came across this amazing photograph of muscle beach on a Russian site, of all places. (!)

I'm pretty sure we haven't seen it before.

uludagsozluk

"Amerikanın california eyaletine bağlı sahil kesiminde sadece vucut geliştirme aletlerinin bulunduğu ünlü vucutcuların sık sık oraya gidip gösteri yaptığı söylenmektedir.
eyalet başkanlığının arnold shwardzenegger in yaptığı dönemde daha bir büyütülüp güzelleştirilmiştir."

The translation is fairly humorous.

"In the coastal part of the state of california in the state of california, it is said that the famous bodybuilders with body development tools often go there and show.
the state presidency arnold shwardzenegger in the period of the time has been expanded and beautified."

2 questions:

What is the sign spelling out...BEACH H ? ? ? (left arrow below)

detail

okay, I admit I should know the other one in the distance (at first i thought it was a watermark) but I tend to get all my 'villes' confused.

also....I don't believe I have ever noticed the sign-up and activity board. (just below the two boys)

detail

also note Vic(?) Jack's Beach(?) Cafe.

The lady on the right is probably questioning the wisdom of walking around in bare feet with all that trash on the ground!

I knew that the one in the background was the Deauville Beach Club, but I couldn't find any pictures with the name on the roof. Then I found this image which solved both mysteries. The foreground text is on the Muscle Beach Bath House.

"Muscle Beach on July 4, 1956 looking towards the Santa Monica Pier and merry-go-round."

Santa Monica Public Library (enlarged and cropped)

The text on the Deauville's roof doesn't seem to have been there long, and of course the building burned down in 1964. Here's a reminder of how it once looked (details of the fire at the link below).

Thank you Hoss. I appreciate your help. (as always)

I don't recall the Muscle Beach Bath House. Have we seen it before?

of course I do remember Deauville Club. It was on the tip of my tongue but fell off.

just found this

Here's another photograph [taken four months before Hoss' photograph] that shows the Muscle Beach Bath House.

"Repairs to a retaining wall on the Promenade near Santa Monica Pier and the Muscle Beach Bath House , March 26, 1956."

calisphere

It's in the distance. (I almost didn't see it)

Mystery fire

We have seen many photographs of fires on NLA. I don't believe we have seen this one.

CHS*

Description: Engine Co. No. 27 fighting fire, Los Angeles. [1912-1915]

*Unless I am mistaken, the California Historical Society CHS] doesn't have any of its items available online.
I found just a handful, including this fire pic, in their store.
__

Here's a closer look at the signs on the buildings. (doesn't include the Coca-Cola sign to the left of the hotel)

detail

Even though it's difficult to read...the writing on the fire-fighting apparatus must be "Engine Co. 27, L.A.F.D."

There's a whole load of them in the USC Digital Library:
The California Historical Society Collection is incomparable for the documentary picture it provides of the growth of Southern California, particularly the development of the Los Angeles region, between 1860 and 1960. The collection contains more than 25,000 photographs. The full archive was placed on long-term deposit at USC in 1990 and includes the Title Insurance and Trust Company Collection, also known as TICOR, and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection.

It's interesting where the dried peppers are hanging. (by the looks of the shadow...I believe they're at the end of an extended pole.

I believe the street number is 3344...or...3341.

I'm wondering if this was a real fire. The only address I can find for A G Spalding & Bros during the given time period is 435 S Spring, and this doesn't look like S Spring Street. Also, the stores look quite small (more like a set), and there appears to be a crowd watching from a hill/stand at the far left (more than you'd expect for interested bystanders) - maybe I'm mistaken. Could this be a demonstration?

Wow...good eye(s) Hoss!

I thought the hillside was covered in saplings...but you're right...they're people!

It briefly crossed my mind that the signs looked a bit odd (but I ignored my mind) what!?

I think you're right. It's a fire demonstration! (for a silent movie perhaps

The reason for the Dalmatians was to keep the horses calm. Without horses, there is no need for Dalmatians...except for nostalgia.

I didn't know that. Thanks CBD.

The LAFD had 163 horses in 1911. (the most ever)

Think what all that entails: -like, where did the department buy the hay to feed all those horses?
Did the department maintain its own farm on the outskirts of the city or did they contract with various farmers?
How much hay could be stored at each individual engine company?
Was it stored at a warehouse and then divvied out to the engine companies?
Why do I ask so many fucking questions?

It's not just the end of the horse that ingests the hay that has to be dealt with
