You're right, Hoss-- my first thought was the Bendix building a few blocks east on 12th. I hadn't thought before about there being two similar towers on 12th St, once both with lettering ending in "ix"...

We first saw the Bendix building in ER's post of August 28, 2009.

The tower on top was a nighttime aid for aviation.
The tower stands 150 ft. The letter B is 25 feet tall and 16 feet wide.

I came across this amazing photograph of muscle beach on a Russian site, of all places. (!)

I'm pretty sure we haven't seen it before.

What is the sign spelling out...BEACH H ? ? ? (left arrow below)

okay, I admit I should know the other one in the distance (at first i thought it was a watermark) but I tend to get all my 'villes' confused.

also....I don't believe I have ever noticed the sign-up and activity board. (just below the two boys)

I knew that the one in the background was the Deauville Beach Club, but I couldn't find any pictures with the name on the roof. Then I found this image which solved both mysteries. The foreground text is on the Muscle Beach Bath House.

The text on the Deauville's roof doesn't seem to have been there long, and of course the building burned down in 1964. Here's a reminder of how it once looked (details of the fire at the link below).

We have seen many photographs of fires on NLA. I don't believe we have seen this one.

There's a whole load of them in the USC Digital Library:

I'm wondering if this was a real fire. The only address I can find for A G Spalding & Bros during the given time period is 435 S Spring, and this doesn't look like S Spring Street. Also, the stores look quite small (more like a set), and there appears to be a crowd watching from a hill/stand at the far left (more than you'd expect for interested bystanders) - maybe I'm mistaken. Could this be a demonstration?

Think what all that entails: -like, where did the department buy the hay to feed all those horses?
Did the department maintain its own farm on the outskirts of the city or did they contract with various farmers?
How much hay could be stored at each individual engine company?
Was it stored at a warehouse and then divvied out to the engine companies?
Why do I ask so many fucking questions?

It's not just the end of the horse that ingests the hay that has to be dealt with
