I think it counts. For Brantford, Ontario how about the birthplace of the telephone and these 2 dudes.

David Charles Bell (top left), Alexander Graham Bell (middle right)

The first phone call was made between Brantford and nearby Mount Pleasant in Ontario. In a one-way transmission on Aug. 3, 1876, Bell heard his uncle David Charles Bell recite Hamlet’s “to be or not to be.” The younger Bell received his uncle’s transmission from the A. Wallis Ellis store in the neighbouring community of Mount Pleasant. The Alexander Graham Bell homestead was in Brantford.

I don't live in the US and they don't sell those in Canada. At least, I've never seen one. 'Vachon' cakes fill that market niche in this country. It's a company from Quebec. Their most popular cake would be Jos Louis. It's in French so pronounced 'Joe Louie'. I think they make one like your 'Twinkie' called a 'Half Moon''. That said, they're a product of a by-gone era. I haven't had one in about 20 years.

I've had twinkies before, they definitely sell them in Canada, or at least they used to.

Grupo Bimbo's Vachon Inc., which owns the Canadian rights to the product and made them during their absence from the U.S. market,[3] produces Twinkies in Canada at a bakery in Montreal. Twinkies are also available in Mexican stores as "Submarinos" made by Marinela, and as "Tuinky" made by Wonder; both Marinela and Wonder are also subsidiaries of Mexican bread company Grupo Bimbo.[4][5] In Egypt, Twinkies are produced under the company Edita. Twinkies are also available in the United Kingdom and Ireland under the Hostess brand name where they are sold in Sainsburys, Tesco, ASDA, and B&M stores. Twinkies are produced and distributed by multiple commercial bakeries in China,[6] where Hostess does not own the brand.[7]
Looks like Twinkies are produced and presumably eaten in Canada by Canadians

KC has been home to many jazz greats. But that's an ancient thing by now.

These days its biggest claim to cultural fame is BBQ:

Though Cheech and Chong are not immediately identified with Vancouver for most people.

Greenpeace perhaps moreso, with the treehugger stereotype and all.

Yes you can buy Twinkies in Canada. Used to be you couldn't but they have been here for some years now.

They still are fairly low visibility, and dessert cake racks are still dominated by a wide array of Vachon created products.

Don't feel bad. I live in the US (and not too far from Chicago) and have never had one (or wanted to try one) either.

this is probably a bit more underground than bbq sauces, but foodie fans and sports fans know the cleve has the market cornered on mustard -- no, i dont think food is really too pop culture for this thread's purposes, but the definite pop culture part of it are the local cleveland mustard wars:

https://executivearrangements.com/ki...-in-cleveland/
https://www.cleveland.com/pdextra/20...ell_the_d.html
https://www.cleveland.com/tribe/2015...ll_park_m.html

***

also, for something current in movies, which i guess are not too pop culture for this thread purpose either, but what the heck. anyway so judas and the black messiah, the new movie about fred hampton and the black panthers that is getting a lot of well warranted attention and good reviews, is of course set in chicago, but was filmed in cleveland. and what little i have seen of it was recognizably cleveland. i guess chi is too scrubbed up these days lol. the cle film commission released the shooting locations:

-North Presbyterian Church, 4015 Superior Ave.
-Cleveland Public Auditorium, 500 Lakeside Ave.
-3rd District Police Headquarters, 2001 Payne Ave.
-Josephat's Church, 1433 E. 33rd St.
-Croatian Tavern, 3244 St. Clair Ave.
-Lane Metropolitan Church, 2131 E. 46th St.
-Zverina Building, 5450 Broadway Ave.
-The Jednota Building (Slovak Catholic Credit Union), 3289 E. 55th St.
-Azman & Sons Butcher, 6501 St. Clair Ave.
-The Nash, 3563 E. 80th St.
-Thoroughbreds Barber, 11109 Ashbury Ave.
-White Oaks Restaurant, Westlake
-Carrie Cerino's Restaurant, North Royalton, (closed in March)
-Mansfield Reformatory, Mansfield

The Black Panther headquarters, in the film, are located in the Zverina Building in the Broadway Avenue Historic District. The rally scene prominent in the film's trailer was shot at Lane Metropolitan Church. The exterior of the Hampton residence was actually filmed in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. It's one of the brick townhomes on the corner of W. 65th and Pearl. A suite in Shoreway Commerce Park served as the interior for the Hampton residence.

I didn't realize that was Cleveland. Midwest cities look remarkably similar. Especially around the edges... lol. It was a very good Chicago sub, IMO.

Ohio must be giving out some crazy tax credits to the film industry. Lots of recent movies filmed in both Cleveland and Cincinnati.

yes the state of ohio has upped its game over the last few years for that kind of thing. the tax credit was going to be removed but local film commissions fought to save it. its not the best state incentive package apparently, but its good and puts ohio in the movie game:

https://development.ohio.gov/FilmOffice/incentives.html

also, locals who made it big in hollywood, like the russo bros for example, are from cleveland and go all out to bring their blockbuster marvel movie filming and the like there.

Apparently, something like 30 states in the US currently offer some sort of incentives to attract the movie industry. Michigan enacted some pretty competitive incentives during the Great Recession as a way to attract jobs back to the state. And they were pretty aggressive - credits could allow a film production to recoup up to 42% of its expenses if filming in the state. Some of the more-recognizable films that took advantage of these credits include:
  • Transformers Franchise
  • Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Gran Torino
But it was fairly short-lived, only from 2008 - 2015, when the film credits were ended. It did leave some small film production entities that still continue to this day, and there is a current push in the state legislature to bring back the credits again. Sadly, even when a movie is meant to take place principally in Michigan or Detroit, it is often filmed elsewhere where costs are lower, often in Canada.

Because of that technocratic nerd.

mmmm While certainly not to the level of Wall street, Toronto does have a financial industry and the Toronto stock exchange (TSE).I've always enjoyed the home grown television drama series "Traders", which was set around Toronto's financial industry. The series aired back in the 90's.
