Is pulled in this case...a...good thing? I went into it assuming it means the project is dead LOL. Still shows the permit as pending.

BTW between the lake, the red line tracks, Addison, and Thorndale there's multiple buildings still waiting new construction permit issuances totaling 444 more units. I think all of those buildings are minimum 5 stories tall. Also over 100 more units in the pending status right around the Brown Line between Irving Park and Damen stops.

^ That reminds me, does anybody know how the project at Marine and Wilson is going? It’s under construction right? It should be rising by this point I’m assuming.

They literally chose the most confusing title for this article. There is indeed pending permits for this project, so it may start construction in a few months. It would have been better if they said they "pulled up" permits for this project.

An interesting generational (I guess) difference here. "Pulling permits" has always been very common jargon in the A/E/C and planning/building communities for "[going downtown and] getting permits."

The other sense, of pulling something out of a production line because it's defective or not ready, is perhaps the meaning that comes immediately to mind for a general audience. "Pulled up" seems to me to be a computer-era usage.

As i say, interesting.

I suspect that both come from common library language. In a library you literally pull on a book you're retrieving an object from a shelf but it's also common language like "Go pull Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' from the stacks". This language is about obtaining a thing.

On a computer you "pull up" information there's no object involved there's no possession. Sort of like how when you're talking about the information in a book when possession is assumed you would say you "look up" the information.

People in the building/planning communities do the same when they are talking about taking steps to possess / obtain permits they say they are "pulling permits". If they were talking about retrieving information from permits that they have already obtained then they might say "I pulled up the permits and they say..."

It wouldn't make any sense to say I pulled up permits in reference to getting the permits because you can't pull up something that you don't have.

Like people have mentioned, it's just the terminology specific to the industry.

I suspect the origins are in the stationery/forms system used when the concept was fairly new: can't now say whether the guy at the permit window back in the day most commonly pulled a form from a file folder or hanging clipboard, or pulled a perforated form from a receipt book, or pulled the middle/ocher copy of a multipart carbonless form.

Tech Shrinkage

Was just waiting for a round of tech office subleases to hit Chicago.
It's here. Salesforce (Salesforce Tower) and Meta (151 N Franklin) throwing big chunks of space onto the sublease market (via Trib).
Surprised Salesforce actually isn't an even larger chunk at this point (but quite possible there may always be a 2nd round there.

You're surprised that an enormous co-living tower got delayed after Covid?

The typical floorplan has "units" (bed/bath/closet only) grouped in clusters of 4 or 5 sharing a kitchen and living room. Multiply that cluster 6x on each floor.

If I was an investor in that tower, I'd be nervous about the feasibility in a generally affordable Chicago market - why would people choose to live there instead of getting their own place or choosing their own roommates? I'd be really nervous after a virus has ravaged the population by spreading airborne between strangers.

We did see some excavation work happen last year, I assume that was just prep work or maybe intended as a vote of confidence by the developer, but it seems clear now that they were not prepared to fully start construction.

Not super surprising given the chaos in the tech sector. I guess the only positive I see is that if they are subleasing the space, it means they expect to re-occupy that space during the next rebound?
