The all innovative Elon Musk hyperloop: a bunch of Tesla's driving in underground highways. Hate to be a naysayer but I cannot take anything he says seriously anymore. Virgin's hyperloop testing at least seems promising. Teslas driving in tunnels however is about as innovative as a fart at a baked bean party and a national embarrassment.

I mean if you believe that the first iteration is the last iteration, sure.

Just the costs of the tunnels alone is far lower than other tunneling contracts of the past. Even that is a big win.

The system will keep evolving too, presumably. We'll have to see how it evolves over time. The first operational service which is really nothing more than a convention centre shuttle shouldn't be how we judge things. Boring Co. is focusing on lowering tunneling costs right now as they think that's the quickest way to profitability, they will focus on the technology in the tunnels later.

There is no reason the mini-buses can't happen for the tunnels in the future and they can't get speeds up in the tunnels to over 100mph as far as I can tell. It's no 1,000mph hyperloop deal but it's still a world different from the service in LV. The key to making the whole thing work is making tunneling as cheap as possible so that it can cover actual useful distances and be more than a convention centre shuttle. Which makes sense.

^ meanwhile, the effort and resources being wasted on Hyperloop could be spent on advancing proven transit tech instead of inventing problems to solve. i mean, given infinite time and resources, any technology can be made to appear groundbreaking.

everyone is hating on the vegas tunnels for having traffic jams and not being safe. i think the tunnels are cool, only if the inside of the tunnels werent boring (heh boring company lives up to their name) and if there was art all over the tunnels, stuck in traffic would be ok in a art tunnel. if the traffic was real bad then you could have cars with seats only (you wouldnt get stuck in the car if the car is on fire) and walk out the tunnel. if the driver was centered then it would be easier to drive and having all wheels turning makes the car less likely to hit the side of the tunnel around curbs. safer and more fun

Aren't most of the savings that the boring company has due to the smaller diameter tunnels that would never be approved for a regular transit project. If you put rails in this tunnel it would be shot down by regulators by the end of the day. I still have no idea how this project got regulatory approval in the first place.

You may have respect for innovative entrepreneurs by principle without necessarily idolize that single one Elon Musk.

I don't see the point of his tunnels for cars. You're bored in a tunnel anyway. At least in a subway, you can read a book or play with your phone. It kills boredom.
Try to read anything in a car, you'll feel sick in a matter of minutes.

We could also talk about his SpaceX business that's probably been entirely backed by NASA and the tremendous knowledge and experience they earned over the past decades, since the 1960s, thus at American taxpayer expense. But that's another story.

I don't see anything outstanding in that individual anyway. He's just a tech opportunist who actually benefits from taxpayer money for his own fame.
Nothing extraordinary in there.
