The Boise River | Spring Runoff Divertissement

Thanks to La Niña, the winter of 2016/2017 has been a record breaker for snow accumulation in Idaho and the Northwest.
The current snowpack as of early March in the Boise River Basin is 144 percent of average which means there is going to be a lot of water coming out of the mountain wilderness of Central and SW Idaho and flowing into the Boise River as it courses through the Treasure Valley towards the mighty Snake River on the Oregon/Idaho border.

The Boise is already flooding sections of the fabled Boise River Greenbelt, but this week the river is expected to hit the flood stage level of 7,000 cubic feet per second as it flows through the city. It is not officially Spring yet and this weekend the mountains are still getting pounded with snow. This is going to be a wet and wild runoff season.

This thread will be ongoing through Spring as a way to remember history and to honor a beautiful river which is one of the main reasons Boise grew into the city it is today.

If anyone else would like to contribute their photos please do it.

The Boise River is a 102-mile-long (164 km) tributary of the Snake River in the northwestern United States. It drains a rugged portion of the Sawtooth Range in southwestern Idaho northeast of Boise, as well as part of the western Snake River Plain.

The Boise River rises in three separate forks in the Sawtooth Range at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet (3,050 m), and is formed by the confluence of its North and Middle forks. The North Fork, 50 miles (80 km) long, rises in the Sawtooth Wilderness Area, along the Boise-Elmore county line, 60 miles (100 km) northeast of Boise. It flows generally southwest through the remote mountains in the Boise National Forest. The Middle Fork, approximately 52 miles (84 km) in length, rises within 12 miles (19 km) of the North Fork in the southern Sawtooth Wilderness Area in northeastern Elmore County. It flows west-southwest near the town of Atlanta, joining the North Fork to form the Boise River, approximately 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Idaho City

Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time? That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains.-Hermann Hesse

The awesome force of nature!! I look forward to seeing the different stages of the river. Hopefully, it won't be too catastrophic.

Yes, don't mess with nature.

I bet more of the Greenbelt closes soon, especially the tunnels under the bridges.

Good stuff Sawtooth.

Looks like some of those mansion owners in the flood plains in Eagle need to get prepared.

February snow dump forces dam managers to raise Boise River again, to above flood stage
Quote:
The Boise Basin snowpack grew over the past month as mountain storms delivered 300 percent of normal February precipitation, forcing federal dam managers on the Boise River to prepare to raise the river above flood level with at least four months of runoff still ahead.

That means Treasure Valley residents should prepare for a long flooding season and consider buying flood insurance in low-lying areas. The basin’s snowpack was measured at 140 percent of average March 1, with the streamflow forecasts ranging from 150 percent to 190 percent of normal this year, reported the Idaho Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported Tuesday that 2.2 million acre-feet of water sits in the three Boise reservoirs and as snow in the mountains of the 2,680 square-mile watershed. That is despite increased flows below Lucky Peak since early February. The releases bought dam managers some capacity, with the three reservoirs at 52 percent, down from 61 percent a month ago.

Water managers from the Corps and the Bureau of Reclamation plan to raise the river to about 7,500 cubic feet per second by Friday. Flood stage is considered to be 7,000 cfs at the river gauge at the Glenwood Bridge in Garden City. Wednesday morning, the gauge showed about 7,200 cfs passing beneath the bridge — roughly 10 1/2 feet of water.

I have always admired the strength of this tree in the river downtown between Capitol Boulevard and the 8th Street Greenbelt Bridge.
Year after year it gets flooded during the runoff yet it remains rooted in the Boise River.

The Arboretum at Barber Station in East Boise, currently under construction, is located next to the Boise River Greenbelt and the river and is getting a taste of what spring runoff flooding is like and will be like in the future.

Looing downstream towards downtown.

Time to head back downtown and home.

I'm guessing all that water in the foundation of that building isn't a good thing.

Could you get a few more angles of the flooding.
