Those were the days when Zen was about all that we had to look forward to, but I can give you three hundred reasons why that won't happen.

Back then I would check to see what's happening with the "Glass Tower". Well that's Ten50 and is not glass. Prospects are much better now even if conversations have moved to other places.

There was also that Lizard Hotel from way back then.

I will never forget those halcyon days of 2005-2008 where Hanover Elleven, Luma, and Evo were our idea of a skyscraperer, Apex was called Concerto and it was a mystery how long 9th and Fig would remain a giant hole (and we never did get our cool Blade Runner lights). I even remember the idea of hanging some sort of LED mesh connecting the City National towers with some cool lighting display.

DTLA has come a long *looong* way. Some of us lost souls remember.

I agree, and briefly digress also. An electrified line. Current trains are diesel. In fact electrify the whole Metrolink system. Also in places the tracks run on top of coastal cliffs and bluffs right by the ocean. Nice view, but the bluffs are eroding. Maybe the big infrastructure bill can help. Would be great to have a high speed train. One hour from downtown L.A. to downtown S.D. on the express, maybe 90-120 minutes on the local. The express would just make a few stops, e.g. Anaheim, San Juan Capistrano, and Oceanside or Carlsbad on way to S.D. One hour would be feasible if it averaged 120 mph or so. A train like that would be a great success.

+++++
Is Brookfield over 30 floors yet? Any new pics? Thanks.

I was 13 in 2007 and kept telling my close friends in middle school that they were going to build a skyscraper right across from Staples Center (the Ritz Carlton) 😂😂😂

Memory unlocked: I remember reading that about connecting the City National Towers in LED mesh and other skyscrapers particularly the AON Tower, installing floodlights on the “concrete fins” lit in red.

I've sometimes wondered what it would be like if I ever got trapped in a time machine & were pushed back over 25 yrs ago. The same age I am today....but would know exactly the date that certain projs & changes for the better would occur in the future. Ppl in LA over 25 yrs ago & around 40-70 yrs old at the time must have felt a brighter future for dtla was futile.

something like this was a very distant wish not all that long ago. If improvements to dt were limited to only new devlpt, the hood overall would still be in poor shape......I recall when broadway was so broken & rundown that even cities in so called third world countries couldn't have been any worse.

Anyone know what's under construction at the corner of Alameda and Industrial (right behind the McDonald's)?

And no, it's not the 6AM project (though, my GOD do I wish it were!).

I’d still be happy with Zen. It was a great tower for the location.

Back in the 80s the future for L.A. was wide open.

I am waiting for months for an update but like I said a long time ago... all those people who did those updates a couple years ago are gone.
Can't wait to move back to L.A. and post those updates myself. I might ask Brookfield for some updates.

Even checked for drone footage (for that tower) on YouTube but without success. Somehow depressing, I know..

lol I'll try and remember to snap another photo next week when I'm out. It doesn't look tremendously different from the photos posted a couple weeks ago which was ~30ish?

It’s still wide open.

The majority of the people you are talking about are the very same people who, let’s just say, decided to sow seeds in the wrong places — specifically in the years 1968, 1974, and 1976.

Yes it’s shorter than what I described, but I also love DC’s human-scale vernacular a lot. What I like more though is that the postmodern and contemporary infill take design cues from pre-war architecture, most notably fenestration. No balconies, weird protruding boxes, garish colors, or other gimmicks. For post-war cities, I believe this is the easiest way to build an attractive urban environment with buildings that don’t look cheap and plastic.

Exceptions are designs like this, but this wouldn’t fall under standard infill.

^ That's a UFO sighting, not an active proposal.

Lord this takes me wayyyyy back. Honestly, it wouldn't be a bad idea. It would totally draw attention to what they did to the Paul Hastings tower. What is that anyway?
