This was announced earlier, and I'm excited to see it get built. I hope they push forward with the northern expansion connecting to the riverfront.

Governor Hochul Unveils Designs to Connect Manhattan's High Line to Moynihan Train Hall
Extension from New York's Most Popular Elevated Park Creates Iconic New Pedestrian Pathway that Will Connect Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall to West Side Destinations from Chelsea to Javits Center

$50 Million Project Complements State Investments to Enhance Midtown West

Quote:
Governor Kathy Hochul today unveiled designs for a new connector that will link New York City's High Line seamlessly to Moynihan Train Hall. This will happen via Brookfield Properties' publicly accessible Magnolia Court that runs through its Manhattan West development.

The proposed project will give pedestrians safe, unobstructed access to the Far West Side of Manhattan via two bridges that will connect to the 10th Avenue terminus of the High Line. A public-private partnership comprising Empire State Development, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Brookfield Properties Group, and Friends of the High Line is undertaking the $50 million project, which will be completed by Spring 2023.

"Despite the challenges and difficulties presented by COVID-19, New York continues to get things done - building boldly and ambitiously to leave a lasting legacy for future New Yorkers," Governor Hochul said. "The High Line's connection to Moynihan Train Hall and other nearby attractions complements our investments in Midtown West, encourages better pedestrian access and provides New Yorkers with a truly one-of-a-kind experience. New York State remains steadfast in its commitment to building functional infrastructure that improves quality of life, promotes economic growth, and helps secure a greener Empire State."
Quote:
Under the plan, the new landscaped Woodlands Bridge will extend eastward from the existing High Line parallel to 30th Street along Dyer Avenue from 10th Avenue to the mid-block between 9th and 10th Avenues, where it will connect to a second Timber Bridge which will travel north and connect into Brookfield's elevated public space on the north side of 31st Street, which terminates on 9th Avenue directly across from the Farley Building and Moynihan Train Hall. The High Line Moynihan Connector will offer a safe, scenic experience for commuters, residents, and visitors navigating this heavily trafficked area near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel.
Quote:
Holly Leicht, Executive Vice President of Real Estate at Empire State Development said, "As New York continues to reopen and recover, our commitment to making innovative, strategic investments in areas ripe for future growth becomes an even more important part of our mission. The High Line Moynihan Connector is a catalyst for economic development, linking major New York City destinations, from Penn Station to Hudson Yards to the newly-expanded Javits Center."

Brookfield Properties Executive Vice President Sabrina Kanner said, "Brookfield Properties is proud to partner with Governor Hochul, Empire State Development and Friends of the High Line as we take this major step forward in the extraordinary transformation of Manhattan's West Side. We are thrilled to welcome New Yorkers and visitors alike to Brookfield's Manhattan West development, which will serve both as a center for restaurants, shops, and year-round public programming and as a vibrant gateway connecting Moynihan Train Hall directly to the entirety of the High Line and the new West Side."

Robert Hammond, Friends of the High Line Executive Director and Co-Founder said, "The new Moynihan Connector realizes a long-standing vision and the latest evolution for the High Line to provide New Yorkers with better and safer access to key transportation hubs, and the rapid project timeline meets the needs of a city emerging from the pandemic.

The design is an exercise in contrast, with its ribbon of lush green plantings, sustainable wood materials and a traditional, Warren-truss design railroad bridge juxtaposed by the High Line's steel structure and the modern glass facades of the surrounding buildings.
To be a truly 21st century city, we need more environmentally responsible ways of connecting. This infrastructure will allow connectivity from Penn Station all the way to the far west side or West Village with only having to cross one city street. We are excited to be part of this partnership, and look forward to making these connections available to all."

Some cuts of the renderings....

Looks like they are preserving the ability to continue that down to actually connecting to Moynihan instead of just the useful but not fully convenient detour to Manhattan West. That's good.

No, they meant that as stated. A lot of people don’t realize that Manhattan West is above grade of the rest of Hudson Yards. Once the High Line connects to the plaza, it’s essentially at grade, and a part if the Moynihan network. That will become more apparent when Moynihan fully opens.

I know MW has major above grade portions that this connects to. I'm aware of the existing plan but having it ONLY go through the Retail portion of Manhattan West en route to Moynihan is akin to forcing people to go through the gift shop on the way out of a museum or Observation deck. Eventually that spur off to the East could and should be extended all the way to Moynihan/Penn Station, if not even further east to maybe 7th Avenue.

That's as far as it can go. It's basically a connection to the High Line itself, which is at grade by the time it reaches that plaza. That plaza serves as "32nd" Street. The city wants pedestrian flow through that plaza eliminate that "superblock" effect of Manhattan West, so they are funneling the pedestrian traffic through it, and it's lined with retail and shops as it would be on an actual street. Nothing to stop people from bypassing it altogether, it's not the only connection on the west side.

What you're talking about is something like the images in the link below, which would be nice, but not necessary from the pedestrian standpoint. It wouldn't be so great from an actual street pedestrian point of view.

At the same time, I do hope they continue with the phase 2 plans of connecting to the riverfront.

Any more information or renderings for the High Line North and East Connection. The High Line is one of my favorite attractions in New York and it's very cool they keep expanding it.

EDIT - I see the link in NYGuy's post. Amazing stuff!!

They haven't mentioned anything about phase 2 (north to the riverfront) yet, but I guess the focus is on phase 1 for now. Here's a little more info on the planning and financing....Brookfield, which will benefit from the connection, will pay 40% of the costs.....

New 25-story hotel will begin rising here (lot 55), next to the planned extension.

The plans, pre-filed on March 20, 2014, call for the construction of a 275-foot tall, 25-story hotel on a 42-foot by 94-foot lot fronting the Dyer Avenue approach to the Lincoln Tunnel, across the street from Brookfield Properties’ Manhattan West and one block from Related Companies’ Hudson Yard complex.

That hotel looks like it's going on the site with the billboard and not blocking the bridge

I noticed a couple of days ago that there is visible progress along the expansion.

Underneath the walkway could potentially be a great place for Citibikes.

Not a good spot. That’s basically a highway median.

FEBRUARY 20, 2023

The extension will connect the High Line to the Manhattan West plaza. But the difference in elevation from 9th Avenue to 10th can be understood from these stairs leading to the plaza…

Saw that the final connecting piece, or the "wooden" portion of the new connection was on site, though not in place yet. It reminded me that I took these pics a couple of weeks ago...

Also, this will be the next installation on the Plinth...
