^^Not really, the murders are not overly concentrated to any specific area at least. There are shootings and murders in the Center City area in front of trendy restaurants, ect of random people.
Maybe a good majority of the victims are part of organized crime, but it seems that more and more innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire. Thats exactly why this is a problem for everyone, not just the ''others'' that some people think should be allowed to do whatever they want.
Judging from the Philly murder map, the city is one big cluster with exceptions in the northeast and northwest.
Not sure why the moderators deleted the updated crime statistics on this thread. Are we not allowed to disclose the huge spike in violence we're seeing nationwide? I'm not surprised this important information was deleted, but I am disappointed.
I'll post again:
Philadelphia at 208 as of yesterday, 41% increase YOY.
New York at 155, up 22% YOY and 45% since 2019.
Portland at 32, up over 600% YOY.
I think one factor we have been overlooking is the massive disruption to drug supply and distribution caused by 2020 lockdowns. Syndicates that were able to keep their supply and distribution networks functioning would inevitably try to edge out competition that had their sources disrupted leading to fighting and increasing violent crime.
Additionally with the economic impacts of the virus hitting so hard as extending for such a long period there will inevitably be people who turn to making money however they can. Unlike other economic recessions the covid crash also aligned a huge shake up in illicit activities markets too hard drugs from over seas became scarce and club drugs had a huge drop in demand with the closure of entertainment venues.
^^Yes, that goes hand in hand with the anti public security sentiment of this era.
Since last reported, in less than 24hrs Philadelphia has reported 3 more homicides.
Chicago is at 263, with 14 homicides so far this week.
New York at 165, inching up to 23% YOY more and 50% more since 2019.
Memorial Day weekend should increase these by a good amount, we're getting into prime violence season pretty soon.
It’s unfortunate how polarized the debate has become politically because there are legitimate points to be made all around. The way the police and justice system has been used since the 80s as a catch all for dealing with with all social problems has been a ticking time bomb that can’t be ignored during the digital age. Everything is a nail if your a hammer we need other tools in our tool kit and community cooperation is the absolute key to solving the issue.
Unfortunately the aggressive war on drugs policy has corrupted the whole criminal justice system not that it was a police decision to turn to asset seizure as a way to fund themselves. A combination of flooding the jails with low level drug offenders and all the cuts to mental health and social welfare in the 80s left the police overburdened and a vicious cycle started.
Armed police have a job to do in civilized society and that’s to deal with clear and present dangers not occupying troops fighting a forever war on drugs. They need more tools and they need to have a better way of reaching out to the communities that are being effected the most.
A local advocate program is my idea of where to put additional funding. A project which helps poor and disenfranchised areas over the hurdles to access to the tools the system offers such as easy access to quality jobs training. Some kind of in neighborhood presence that knows the people and can help resolve mental health and addiction issues that lead to further problems.
Having police live in the communities they police is the best and quickest way to solve the problem we are facing but our societal problems are old and deep so until then having a local interface that the police can work with or the like might be what we need.

Portland (33 murders and counting) effectively legalized hard drugs a while ago, and it didn't seem to make things safer at all. Instead, it seemed to attract a lot of hardcore druggies from around the nation which helped to spike the violent crime rate. It also encouraged gang violence by massively expanding the size and value of the drug market in the region, and turned it into a trafficking point (which is why out-of-state gangbangers have been involved in some of the recent violence).

Covid induced societal upending of historically susceptible populations
Increased joblessness and poverty
Police backing off aka blue backlash
Recent acts of racial antagonism (primarily George Floyd incident)
Different cities are basically separate laboratories where the above elements have kicked up their own hornets nest versions.
Wow, Austin is fairing particularly bad as well. We’re looking at another city that’ll join the 100% increase YOY murder club. Very much looking forward to hearing about how it’s normal, not a big deal, and how it’ll continue to increase by 100% every year until it is a legitimate war zone.
