First look: Chef from San Antonio's Cherrity Bar opens birria trailer serving savory East Side eats

There’s something comforting about a hearty, complex stew — especially when it's still chilly outside.

Enter La Tienda de Birria, a new mobile kitchen from the culinary minds behind Kuriya at Cherrity Bar. Chef Ernest Bradley has been researching the Jalisco-born stew called birria for years now, and the knowledge gained is evident in the final product.

At a low-key, weeknight soft opening, Bradley treated diners to a full birria experience, replete with crispy grilled corn tortillas stuffed with braised goat meat with cheeses, lovingly dubbed “quesatacos.” Also on offer were bowls of La Tienda's namesake: goat-based birria, as well as savory albóndigas, or meatballs, sprinkled with queso fresco.

The traditional stew, which is having a moment here in SA, is made with goat, beef, lamb or mutton with a warming abundance of adobo, garlic, cumin and bay leaves. It’s served with hand-pressed tortillas, housemade salsas and raw white onion, lime and cilantro for added acidity.

La Tienda de Birria's menu, though small in offerings, was big on flavor.

The rich, melty cheese in the quesataco was amped up tenfold by the complex dipping broth. When Chef Bradley said he “had a problem” with the albóndigas, it was quickly made clear what he meant: it was hard to stop eating the damned things.

Eventually, the menu will grow, Bradley pledged. But for now, his crew aims to perfect its offerings on Friday and Saturday nights 5-9 p.m. — or until sellout.

The unassuming, black trailer is posted up at 929 N. New Braunfels Ave., on the East Side.

New hacienda-style Mexican restaurant, bar to open in Lone Star from celebrated San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez

Celebrated San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez is about two months away from debuting his latest restaurant and bar, and the new project will be a literal homecoming for him.

Hernandez plans to open Casa Hernán in the Lone Star District behind Blue Star at 411 E. Cevallos St. in a rambling, two-story home that served as his private residence for eight years. He lived on the top floor and opened the ground floor as an event space, which also went by the name Casa Hernán. Hernandez has been renovating the space for months with new lighting, furniture and decor.

Southtown sports bar McIntyre's months away from San Antonio debut

McIntyre's prided itself as being "valued and embraced" by the neighborhood when it set up shop in Houston. The sports bar will have to wait for an embrace from the San Antonio community with its new location about eight months from opening.

McIntyre's will open its San Antonio location in Southtown at 1035 S Presa Street, which used to be home to restaurant and bar The Patio, until its closing in November 2019.

Owner Kyle Berg says McIntyre's is a 3,700-square-foot neighborhood sports bar that resembles an ice-house style setting. Large glass garage doors will open to incorporate its indoor and outdoor space. McIntyre's opened in the Houston Heights neighborhood in 2016 and added a second location in Downtown Houston in 2017.

Sarah Yee, sole franchise owner of the Austin Highway restaurant and an upcoming location in New Braunfels, is known as "Auntie" as a sign of respect. As I chatted with Auntie Sarah on a chilly February morning, the warmth in her hospitality and conversation emphasized the familial experience inside L&L. If you didn't already know, you might be shocked to learn L&L is part of an international chain. It certainly doesn't feel like one. Yee's inviting presence makes San Antonio's sole L&L feel like an escape.

The event, which will take place on March 5 at the Bankersmith Hall near Fredericksburg, will serve up pound after pound of the delicacy known as the Rocky Mountain oyster. According to the festival's event page on Facebook, the bull testicles will be celebrated and “fried in tenderly love” for consumption.

Eating testicles from calves, lambs, roosters, turkeys and other animals is a tradition on ranches throughout Central Texas and the Western United States. The festival will also serve up sweetbreads made from an animal’s pancreas or thymus gland.

Barbacoa,

Barbacoa and Big Red I'll do. I also eat breaded deep fried chicken livers now and again.
I'll skip the Genitalia Festival for now however, thank you very much. They must be at the very tail end of ideas for festivals I guess. These organs are also ground and poured into potted meat cans for sale in grocery stores.

In the beginning, Texas icehouses did just that: they housed ice.

Before refrigeration, the neighborhood businesses stored and distributed massive blocks of the cold commodity, supplying nearby families so they could prolong the life of the meat and produce in their iceboxes.

As modern refrigeration made its way to South Texas in the ’30s, the joints’ connection to frozen blocks of ice became more figurative. They became gathering places for folks from all walks of life — places to stop and chat while grabbing a beer, a loaf of bread or a pack of smokes on their way home from work.

While icehouse culture has been a longtime part of San Antonio, the city’s experienced an upswing in far fancier places to drink. What’s more, its breakneck growth has also drawn plenty of professionals with enough money to seek out those more refined meeting spaces.

Are the Alamo City’s icehouses on their way out as community gathering spots? Local owners think the culture is still alive and that their businesses have more than a fighting chance.





I personally hope that icehouses are with us for a very long, long time.

Dave's Hot Chicken is a fast-food concept specializing in Nashville-style tenders and sliders, but got its start as a flocked-to Los Angeles pop-up in 2017. With more and more eateries coming to the Alamo City, it was only a matter of time before hot chicken arrived.

Dave's Hot Chicken grew into a brick-and-mortar restaurant expanding across the U.S., with celebrity investors including Drake, Samuel L. Jackson, former First Lady of California Maria Shriver, Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, and Good Morning America anchor and NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan. Texas is home to a handful of restaurants, including a Waco location set to open in the spring, but San Antonians will not have to drive far to get a taste of the celeb-backed chicken.

Bottling Department original Fletcher's Hamburgers is closing up shop at Pearl

Milt’s Pit BBQ, an award-winning barbecue spot in the Central Texas town of Kyle, will relocate to next month to San Antonio's quick-growing northeastern suburb of Live Oak.

The business shared the news on Facebook, saying it needed to relocate into larger digs.

“… We’ve known for a while that our space is small and we would need a bigger space to grow our business,” the post read. “After an exhaustive and fruitless search for a new location in Kyle, we expanded our search area and found a great spot just a few miles down I-35. We’ll be relocating our business to Live Oak ... and have some really exciting plans taking shape.”

Ride through San Antonio's history at Bombay Bicycle Club

When it comes to Brackenridge Park-adjacent dives, San Antonio's Bombay Bicycle Club is king. Inside the well-tread establishment, table 9 distinguishes itself from the rest. The corner booth, all dark wood and worn cushions, is marked with messages scratched by finger nails and house keys, two-beers deep proclamations of love, pre-Instagram friendship signifiers, and of course, initials that simply announce "Here I am!"

It's the type of communal scrapbook scribble you'd see tattooing the thickest oak tree at summer camp or defiling a church pew. It's the only zone in the near 50-year-old bar and restaurant where this sort of thing flies, General Manager Ali Barrera tells me. But I think this particular corner captures the overarching vibe quite well. It's one of those places people aren't quick to forget.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue will open its second its San Antonio-area store this weekend

After making its San Antonio debut in 2014, the chain is expanding into New Braunfels.

Honolulu-based L&L Hawaiian Barbecue will hold a grand opening for its newest San Antonio-area location this weekend, doling out frosty Dole whips and burgers with a ramen “bun.”

The Saturday, March 19 christening for the chain's New Braunfels store will include live music from Jeff Schmidt, a show by Hiti Mahana Hula Dancers and a Koaloha Ukulele performance. The restaurant, located at 156 Texas Highway 46 #200, also will conduct giveaways, including bestowing the first 75 visitors with a free T-shirt.

The party will run 11 a.m.-6 p.m. After that, the spot will operate 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 3:45-8 p.m. daily.

L&L made its San Antonio debut in 2014 with a restaurant at 1302-1 Austin Highway. The chain operates more than 200 outlets across the country, serving Hawaiian specialities such as Spam musubi, loco loco and barbecue chicken bowls.

Fuddruckers grilling up plans for new San Antonio mall location

Another week, another restaurant is opening a new location in San Antonio. Fuddruckers, the burger chain that was founded in San Antonio, is opening a new location in North Star Mall. The thing is, it looks like this will be the only one.

The burger chain, now under ownership of Black Titan Franchise Systems LLC, will open the North Star Mall Location along with four other mall locations in Texas and 10 total across the U.S., according to a news release.

Jacala, one of San Antonio’s oldest restaurants, went up in flames early Thursday morning, the damage so extreme fire officials deemed it a total loss. The West Side Tex-Mex institution opened in 1949, amassing a loyal following of regular customers over the years.

Jarrett Vocke, a batallion chief with the San Antonio fire department, said that the loss of the restaurant was personal to him, because it was the gathering place after his own father’s funeral. “This is a huge loss to the community, there’s no other way to say it,” Vocke said.

Lucille Hooker, who co-owns Jacala with two sisters, said Thursday afternoon she was in shock. “I don’t have any idea what the future holds ... It’s just gone.”

Hopeless? I saw it in mysa,

I hope they were insured, after all this is a very well established eatery. I suppose it is the shock of a total loss all at once that makes smoldering ruins seem hopeless.
Hopefully rather, in a year the three sisters will be all smiles and cutting a ribbon to open the brand new and improved, Jacala Restaurant.
