How it accomplishes a 24% increase in places to lay one’s head from 764 to 949 is anyone’s guess, but the tally is independent from the conversion of the old Tribune Tower. Maybe it goes all-apartments, with ten on a floor. Maybe it goes all-hotel and bogarts the local hospitality market. Or maybe… dare we say… it gets taller? We have no idea. But it’s a fun mental exercise that should be taken with a metric buttload of salt.
If they're so close they should obviously just go for new tallest. As exciting as this article is, and the prospect of this happening and being even taller, I'm still only going to celebrate when we hear real news, or better yet when it's approved and U/C.

Good find though

I don't understand why they'd make such a large investment and not grab the number 1 spot. It would only help their sales.

Agreed, you'd think an extra 30 ft on top of 1400 would be worth the marketing benefit/prestige alone.

Another 100 on top of that they could go for western hemisphere

This is the one time I wouldn't mind seeing a spire integrated!

Sadly not the case, because the uncompleted and exposed spire on WTC1 gets counted and there's zero chance this breaks 1800 feet

Was thinking more 'roof' height. I'm not picky!

True, and it would just be Smith+Gill topping themselves.

Chicago is the only Western city where a 2000 footer was almost built/broke ground at least. I wouldn't say zero, but maybe 0.005

Regardless it doesn't need to be that high anyway, only building nerds care about roof vs/ pinnacle stuff too much.

I forgot to ask, why don't you buy their stories? Do they have a bad reputation? I've never heard of them before. The article doesn't seem made up, but if it was why would someone do that?

I wouldn’t mind two short spires on both end of the Tower. Kinda like the building near the sears tower with the short spires. I wonder if someone could do a quick mock-up of the tribune tower to see what it would look like with the two spires.

I'm not going to cry if this building gets a spire or two, but I don't think it needs it. Leave that shit for NYC. We measure our buildings' heights by their roofs in Chicago.

Quick photoshop. Proportions and angle are probably off but should give an idea.

Thanks HomrQT! Definitely provides a better idea for me for what kind of impact that'll have... might be a bit more to the right because of the annex part of the Tribune though

If this tower gets built at 1400 feet or taller, I'll buy a banana suit and take a picture there. And I promise I will!

What a site that would be for the public: A dozen internet crazies dancing in banana suits on the street while pounding banana smoothies and shoveling loaves of banana bread in their mouths...

Can't wait!

Serious question: Does anyone know if the crown will be lit up?
