I think Chase Tower was supposed to be 80 floors but got lowered down to 75 because of Hobby Airport. Sounds like a restriction to me, maybe someone can clarify for sure

Yea that's why I asked, referring to Chase Tower. Would it be possible to build a taller building anywhere in Houston?

Yes.

Uptown Houston where the Williams Tower is, is not obstructed by any FAA restrictions. It’s not on the path to any airports... Same goes for any business district on the west side. You can build as tall as you want there.

I’ve heard of the Chase Tower dilemma before but also know there are parts of DT Houston that don’t have height restrictions. Meaning yes, you can build taller there.

The reason they haven’t is because there isn’t any demand to do so. Houston already has 2 supertalls with Chase and Wells Fargo towers. Both above 300 meters. But the city is awash in vacant office space. Supertalls from non-office towers are rare in the US outside of NYC/CHI. Usually cities have to either build a mixed use tower with office added in (office components are larger floor to ceiling height than resi/hotel) AND/OR tack on a stick (erm “spire”) to get it over 300 meters to meet supertall height.

MIA has some resi supertall proposals but they stay proposals until someone actually decides to build one.

That first photo above is cool because you can see all three towers that Hines has constructed in Downtown Houston in this, the 21st century.

Why has recent new buildings in Houston built with the same glass exterior? Other than the shape of the buildings, the skyline becomes rather bland. There doesn't seem to be much imagination to the facades.

And if I'm not mistaken, Pickard-Chilton designed two out of three, no? That's quite the architectural stamp on that side of downtown.

Height-wise, Texas Tower in this picture looks to be at about the 54th floor level height of the 600 Travis Street Tower (the tall, grey skyscraper just behind).
