I don't recall seeing an exact cause of the fire. The Ithaca Landmarks and historical signifigance had a lot to do with the design (and delay).

FYI...here's a post I made in a different thread:

Definitely looks like it was a major institution in the area. Hopefully the new one will hold up the legacy of the old.

^ It was and hopefully will be again.

A recap of the recent Planning & Development Board meeting (some of the info has been posted earlier) from the Ithaca Times:

Harold

The city looks to have a bunch of projects under construction in the not too distant future.

As noted in a previous post, the Chapter House renovation is underway. The Ithacating blog just posted some pics/info which I will link. I also wanted to note there was a red apartment building next to the bar which also was destroyed. The final pic in the link shows a nice rendering of that building's replacement. Here's the link:

https://ithacating.com/2017/06/16/ch...-update-62017/

An here's a pre-fire pic of the two buildings:

Here's two articles about a zoning change which will have quite an impact on the city.

From the Ithaca Times:

http://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/co...7259a966e.html

From the Ithaca Voice

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/08/expl...ned-mean-care/

I guess it will be a wait and see as to how developers react.

Ithaca Voice article about a possible site consolidation of Ithaca's governmental offices. This would have quite an impact on that area fo downtown and fee up some sites for further development:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/08/city...entral-campus/

Another Voice article about grocer Aldi expanding their store in an underserved area of the city. Of course this is near the recently rezoned "Waterfront Area" which could be a response to the hope of more residents moving to that section of the city.

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/08/dont...dis-expanding/

Two articles from the Ithaca Times bring some good news for downtown, and a hopeful change of attitudes for some of the public on affordable housing.

The CF Credit Union moving to the old First National Bank building downtown:

http://www.ithaca.com/news/cfcu-to-m...499ce3d2f.html

Not a resounding endorsement, but at least some support in Trumansburg:

http://www.ithaca.com/news/trumansbu...7258ac053.html
