More to my point was that if you compare the construction of those three towers to what else was being built at the time (OCS or not) Chicago isn't building 3 of the ten tallest buildings in the world right now or even 3 of the 300 tallest. The 69-74 boom remains far and away the most significant in terms of skyscrapers.

Not relative to other cities of course this is a very big construction period for Chicago and imo OCS is the single most important project for urbanization of the city. It's going to have a huge impact in that area. As has been stated before by other forum members here Chicago Avenue just kinda falls off the map as it stands now.

Chicago Ave is an embarrassment right now looking west from the Mag Mile.

This project, the Amli, and hopefully some others in the future will dramatically change that.

It needs some canyonization, especially given how wide that street is. OCS will be the game changer that sets off this transformation.

Some are certainly (especially Vista) among the 300 tallest, unless that was exaggerated.

As the world advances it's only natural to compare with other cities, and be excited/disappointed accordingly.

From a pure skyline and coolness level, I'd agree that it would be second to Standard Oil, JHC, and Sears, but from a more holistic view, the city is just a different beast now with how much every downtown neighborhood has changed in just the last 5 years. If we get another 5 years of this... I don't even want to say, can't jinx anything

^ Great posts from both of you.

I would only add that Chicago's handicap isn't lack of wealth--it's wealthier than all of those places other than you know who. It's the fact that American wealth gets trashed away in the form of sprawly shit.

City building is the exception, not the norm, around here.

If America spent its wealth building cities like China does, we'd be wiping our asses with those places

OCS obviously has a pretty good chance

If the cycle is coming to an end and the market/economy seems to be on the down (albeit temporarily) I'm not going to hold my breath for the other supertall projects, especially Tribune.

Maybe they'll happen next cycle?

OCS is the one we really need to squeeze out of the cycle, and I think Sterling Bay jumping in probably pushes it across

If we can squeeze this last project out of this boom, I'll be satisfied.

^I tend to agree with your 2 year prediction. Construction is a lagging indicator of the economy, so it will take some time to burn backlog off even when the overall economy cools. Some notable projects that are planned to break ground in the new year in addition to One Chicago Square:
- A condominium at the former Children's Hospital site in Lincoln Park
- An apartment building at the corner of Cermak and Wabash
- An apartment tower at 725 W Randolph
- A new ambulatory building for Rush Medical Center
- An office building at 330 N Green Street
- Two apartment towers at parcels JK and L in Lakeshore East
- An apartment tower at 210 N Stetson (former parcel of the never-built Mandarin Oriental)

This is not to mention the less noticeable or sexy, but significant work beginning at O'Hare that will progress for the next decade.

It is good to temper expectations, but I think 2 years is a good guess.
