In the event that this does actually get built, South Florida would have 3 of the top 10 largest malls in the US which seems a little unnecessary. Not sure this is thread worthy though.

Your kids can be in the ocean while you shop in south beach instead. I don't even see kids being left in the water without parents in any case anyway.
Outdoor water parks never stay open long either, just too much competition.

This is what I don't understand. We are already saturated with malls down here. However, I do like the theme park/ski resort/water park concept since basically there is only 1 water park in South Florida.

^^^ Rapids is the only one? Not even a water park in Broward?

There's also a bunch of smaller parks in Palm Beach county like Calypso Bay in Royal Palm Beach.

There are a million small water parks throughout south florida. You see them in a lot of parks.

Just off the top of my head, in addition to this project, there's a new urban mall in Norwalk, CT anchored by Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, there are new Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus flagships in Manhattan (alongside a 1 million square foot retail center in Hudson Yards), Kings Plaza in Brooklyn has basically been completely rebuilt with new anchors, and there's a large outdoor mall planned for Syosset (LI).

Second tier malls and lower-end malls are dying, but first-tier retail is thriving.
Century City's new Westfield Mall is amazing.

It needs a casino/boozy side for adults; like pools, restaurants, and bars wrapped around some hotels and a casino.

True. But also have a healthy area were there's hot springs.

Nevermind I forgot it's Florida, it's hot there

The Hard Rock Casino is going through a major upgrade (which isn't too far from this mall site)

One of my best friends lives in the Palm Springs North neighborhood which is directly east of this proposed mall and he doesn't want this at all.
The area is heavily populated & congested.
Traffic is already a nightmare in the area during rush hour and they can't even widen the main road either. There is no mass transit except for buses.
He is considering selling his home if this goes through.

^ Widening the main road would do nothing but increase traffic that much more.

Speaking of traffic in Miami: I've driven in multiple major metropolitan areas including New York, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, amongst others. Miami, hands down, as the most infuriating traffic I've ever seen.

Once driving down I-95 in Miami, which miraculously was moving without huge delays and traffic jams, I witnessed a giant escalade go out of control, flip over the concrete median, crash onto oncoming traffic after flipping mid air. Also saw the driver ejected at least 50 feet out of his windshield onto incoming traffic. Needless to say I highly doubt he survived.

When a region is built for the automobile...

I don't find the highway traffic in the Miami region to be any worse than other major metro areas' highway traffic.

But the secondary "city" streets are what I find to be awful... since they're basically just 3+ lane highways at ground level with traffic lights.

I would agree with this. The airport to downtown/beaches is ALWAYS jammed. It's such a ridiculously short distance, and I'm always amazed at traffic.

Also, the driving/parking is the worst I've seen in the U.S. Rental car will be scratched/dented.

Today is the day for approval. If it gets approved by the commissioners (Miami-Dade). I guess we'll find out in the hours coming.

Also, re. the "traditional retail is dead" side-discussion- Macys 1Q results were just announced and way up from previous year.

Net income rose to $140 million, which is pretty solid. Stockholders did quite well today.

Well as long as it further endangers wetlands and has crappy transit service, push it through asap! This is really the wave of the future. How inspiring.
