This thing is aligned almost perfectly with the tower at 500 N Lake Shore Drive, it seems like a missed opportunity for views. If it was located on the south side of the lot, those east facing units would see the lake and not stare directly into the windows of another tower and podium across the street.
I understand there was already some underground parking there, it must be really significant for the tower to be put on the north side of the site which seems like the less desirable location. Was it the parking garage that dictated the placement of the 836 foot tower?

Basically, yeah... the parking garage had a cutout at the northeast corner that was unexcavated, where you could sink caissons for a future highrise. Moving the tower elsewhere on the site would require rebuilding a section of garage, which was maybe too expensive.

Also this tower is subject to a PD that includes Parkview West. Any changes to the PD, like changing the tower location, might require the approval of the Parkview West condo association. And they would not approve a change, since it blocks their lake views.

It's kind of a game of chess happening on the street grid - if One Bennett had reached construction first, 500 LSD might've been bumped into adopting a different configuration (shifted south or rotated 45 degrees, etc.). A sign of a truly dense city.

Looking at this area, the park on this block, combined with North Pier, Ogden Slip, and the tiny residences near the Spire site, really afford tremendous southward view corridors from the north side of Grand. It's a waste that the new 545 McClurg tower is so short. Makes you wonder whether developers will buy the mediocre aging apartment building at 445 Ohio, along with its outsized and underutilized podium, and put up something (probably sited along Grand) rivalling One Bennett Park one day.

The real question is why didn't Related just build 500 N LSD differently? They could have shifted that tower south and opened up views for their site across the street. Did they not already own One Bennett when they started on 500 LSD?

^^I don't think they did. 500 N. LSD was proposed in 2010, started in 2011. I don't think Related got control of 451 E. Grand until 2012. Not sure though.

Looking at those photos, the footprint of this building looks very small for the size of the lot. I guess I was expecting it to fill more of that block. The park is nice, I just expected the building to fill at least half the block. Oh well, onward and upward..

Walked by the site today and boy are those guys going to work. That thing is already climbing at a fast pace. I would not be surprised to see it top off by sometime next summer

This tower is going to do exactly that, tower and soar. It's a really narrow structure and will be quite visible. It'll fill a gap in the eastern skyline as viewed from the south.

1/8/17, from Adler Planetarium.

I just realized this shot caught the tower crane for OBP as well, on the far right. Gives a good indication how it'll affect the skyline. I didn't realize it would be visible all the way down to the base.

^ wow, i never would have guessed that this one would be so visible from adler.

though if/when those empty lakefront LSE lots and former spire lot are built out, OBP will go back into relative hiding from that vantage point.

No the Wanda Cranes wont be visible for a while but when they are they will show up in front of Hancock/WTP from this angle.

Nice updates as always. Starting to rise steadily.
