Catalina Island is the perfect LA weekend getaway

Catalina Island is an island that sits 22 miles out in the Pacific from Los Angeles. It was purchased in 1919 by gum magnet William Wrigley jr. To this day descendants of William Wrigley Jr still own the Catalina Island Company and carry on his vision to create a world-class resort. The Wrigley Estate still stands high above Avalon Bay.

Thanks for stopping by.

I visited Catalina on a family trip to LA when I was younger... can't recall if it was 1996 or 2002. Anyway, it's definitely a unique place to visit. I loved it out there! The boat ride through the foggy marine layer and then suddenly being in the blazing July sunshine on the island was quite a contrast.

Beautiful set. I haven't been there since 1999 or 2000. Loved it as a kid.

Ive always been interested in this island, pretty much have looked at every street on street view. I always wonder what it would be like to live there.

Love visiting Catalina Island. Was going about once a year pre-pandemic... have to do an island jeep tour when you visit! The Catalina Island Museum is worth visiting as well. The zip line tour is a lot of fun too. Thanks for sharing your photos!

Great photos! I love Catalina, though I haven't been there in many years.

Lovely place, great photos. I've only been to Catalina once-- several years ago for the Catalina Jazz Fest, which was held in the beautiful 'casino' building (pictured in this thread). I'd love to go back soon!

Almost got to go (thanks COVID) last year.

Didn't know the backstory. Neat.

Beautiful pictures! Went there a few years ago and loved the hiking trails and vistas. I was surprised at how noisy those gas-powered carts are—but that’s a small price to pay for enjoying this idyllic island.

It's a nice place to visit but it’s also very expensive too. Restaurants, hotels, even the supermarkets. Hotel rooms are very small, reminded me of when we went to Paris. I had a nice time driving around on the electric carts, and going up high in the hills (the wife freaked out looking down) and seeing the views of the ocean. It truly is a place I did enjoy visiting, but not a place I would go often. I've only been twice and I lived in LA most of my life other than 5 years I moved away as an adult. I wouldn't mind going to the Jazz Festival they usually have every Fall, that would be nice.

That was also my first reaction, this island would fit very well in the Mediterranean.

Beautiful pics!

Yeah, it's hard to believe you are still in LA County when you step off the Catalina Express in Avalon.

Nice pictures!

How much did it cost to go there, and how long did it take?

Any idea if you can see Catalina Island from the mainland? Can you see Avalon from the mainland?

You can see Catalina from the mainland and vice versa. It's 22 miles from the mainland and takes about an hour on the Catalina Express which is $74 and $67 if you're 55 and older.

ChrisLA, it was explained to me that the rooms are small because of the limited space on the island and especially in Avalon. Roomy hotel rooms are few and far between. Even the new Vons is much smaller than usual. I found it to be the perfect weekend getaway from the rat race of LA. It was like I was on the Mediterranean in Italy, Spain or France and only an hour away from 17 million people. Anyway, glad you all enjoyed the photos. Thanks so much.

Great pictures, but I personally found Avalon a bit...'off'. I'm not sure exactly what I expected, but I was hoping for something like Capri. Avalon is very, very far from that.

I am of course spoiled by the fact that I live on the coast already and recognize that there are vast differences between some of the coastal cities. Avalon, while quaint, is horribly overpriced. We didn't have a single great meal during the 4 days we stayed, and the hotel accomodations are lacking. Wow, that sounds really snobby. But honestly, as a vacation excursion, the island environment outside of town is much more interesting than Avalon itself.

I will say this, the Island Spa in Avalon was a beautiful, but expensive place to spend the day.

There were three totally fascinating things I gathered while there:
1. All of the trash on the island goes to a compacting facility on the south end and then taken on barges to the mainland to be (I assume) trucked to a landfill. So they haven't spoiled the island with landfill, which is wonderful.
2. The school sports teams in Avalon have very few home games and the kids have to cart their equipment and pay for the ferry to go to games. When we were on the ferry on the way out there in September 2019, the Avalon HS football team was on the boat with us, returning from a game. HS sports are expensive enough, can you imagine having to also pay the ferry rate to get to your game? It's not clear if there is a bus waiting on the Long Beach side?
3. Cars are not illegal to bring over, but there are limitations on the physical size of the cars themselves. Basically you cannot get much larger than a golf cart, but you also see Mini's, Smartcars, and some odd Japanese import models not commonly seen on the mainland. The regular ferry service does not offer car carry, so you have to have it barged out there via charter of some kind.
