Imagine you could board a river cruise boat at michigan ave and be dropped off at the tower's base with access to the top of the building and have a glass of wine while watching the sunset.
I admit to having thought of this as well. I definitely warmed up to the design of the observation tower.

I think if there was even the slimmest of hope for it to be revived it would still have to be with some major conjoining tourist attraction be that a stadium, concert venue, museum, or programmed park of some sort.

Their presentation for the Committee on Design is up. Slides 18 & 21 shows they left just a wide enough gap to possible fit a 3rd & 4th track. Hopefully this is enough to allow for some future access to the B&OCT bridge.

When the Chicago Fire moved back to Soldier Field it was announced as a temporary move until a new soccer specific stadium could be built somewhere in the city. Obviously a lot is up in the air with Soldier Field right now w/ the Bears but depending how that saga ends and whether the Fire can come to terms with the city on a longer-term agreement, this site is one of the few central locations that could support such a thing and could anchor an entertainment district in lieu of the casino. Mansueto certainly has the money to do it.

Oh wow never thought of that, this area would be a fantastic location for a potential Fire stadium. Right next to Chinatown which i'm sure has the demographic that loves soccer. Add the underground red line station for transit.

It seems like it’s still in play, the president of the Chicago Fire said this a few weeks ago:

Quote:
“We are looking at all of those options,” said Glassman Chrein, who asserted the Fire wouldn’t follow the Bears to the northwest suburbs. “If we do build a soccer-specific stadium we want to be in the city. We want to be the Chicago Fire. We want to be close to you, our fans. Hopefully we’ll be able to share more on that in the coming months, but we’re still looking at those options.”

Wells Wentworth Update (last week)

Most of the pavement is now done; they should be finishing the last bits of sidewalk/street paving soon and then installing street lights, etc. Hopefully they can get trees and landscaping in before the winter cutoff. They also need to put two coats of asphalt down over the concrete paving, and the asphalt batch plants also close soon.

At this point I'm guessing they will wait until spring to open the street, if at all.

Colored pavement at the bike lane:

No new photos, but it looks like the street is basically ready and it could open any day now. They have the top course of asphalt down and lanes are striped. Streetlights are in. The stoplight is in place for the new intersection at 15th St by the DPI. They have also put in a trail connection to the riverfront side of Ping Tom Park, so there will now be two access points to that park instead of one.

The only think left to do is landscaping, but they might wait until spring for that. I would not be surprised if Lightfoot has a ribbon cutting in December or January before the election...

I think the Wells-Wentworth connector may now be open! I just observed it walking across from the British School, so maybe someone else can confirm... hoping to walk down it to Chinatown tomorrow.

Tried to walk down it today entering at the north side and it was all gated off again. Lame.

Well, without any other developments around here soon, this is destined for drag race city.

There are raised intersections. They won't be drag racing unless they want a lot of suspension damage and cracked fenders.

I could see kids gathering here with ATVs though.

U of I plans marijuana research center at Discovery Partners Institute

Quote:
Discovery Partners Institute, the University of Illinois research center underway in the South Loop, has high hopes to launch a marijuana research facility.

DPI has begun a search for an executive director and researchers, and it has support from the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. But it doesn't yet have funding commitments from either one for a project that likely will need tens of millions to become a reality.

The cannabis research institute is the first significant effort by the city and state to build on Chicago's critical mass in the marijuana industry. The city is home to several of the largest U.S. marijuana companies—including Cresco Labs, Green Thumb Industries, Verano and PharmaCann—which employ thousands of workers. Since legalizing recreational marijuana three years ago, sales have grown to about $1.5 billion.

The University of Illinois sees opportunities to draw on its strengths in agriculture, genomics and medicine to study topics ranging from marijuana production to the health impacts of cannabis.

Interesting. I can't imagine they'll be doing any growing on the 78 site, except maybe a limited hydroponic thing inside the building... Greenhouses not the best use of valuable land, and there are obviously security concerns doing that in the middle of the city.

They had installed sign posts right in the middle of the bike lanes so I guess they decided to tear up and repave those sections. Another thing I saw people pointing out is how the car lane gets wider at that crosswalk. It’s kinda weird and if anything should get a bulb out for the pedestrians. Maybe it’s mean to be an intersection one day?
