That makes sense, it sounds like DPI doesn't want to be next to the casino so they're at opposite ends of the site 1/2 mile apart.

Related Midwest had a model of The 78 at yesterday's forum. Since the observation tower is at least 1000 ft, most of the towers look to be in the 500-800 foot range

Is anything happening with the 78 at all? Other than the casino proposal, I have not heard anything in a number of months

Same thoughts, seems like all they've done is the connector. Would love to see this massive plot of land be revamped soon

Is the casino proposal legit? A few 5-800 footers and an 1000+ foot observation tower would be epic in this location.

C'mon Chicago, wow the world again!

I think they are just waiting to see if they get the Casino license before they start anything else.

But that's just it, the area where the casino proposal is situated was planned as part of later phases of work (Phases 3 or 4, iirc). The DPI and adjacent parcels were always part of Phase I or 2 of the work, but no news (other than Wells Connector and other infrastructure updates) since the release of the winning DPI design from late 2020/early 2021.

^IIRC, the area where the casino is supposed to go was part of phase I and was to include a residential tower and spec office. This was all before COVID hit though. Also, I thought I read somewhere not too long ago that the DPI was supposed to start this year and open in 2025.

They don't have a defined Phase 1. If you see Phase 1 on any marketing materials, take that with a huge grain of salt.

I imagine Related is trying to push several different sections of the development at once to see what will draw interest from tenants and investors. Whatever gets built first will affect everything else. Also note that the stuff along the east side of the site is dependent on a huge and costly tunnel for the Rock Island Line, so they probably can't afford to start there first.

If they get the casino license, then they'll probably use the momentum to focus on hospitality and entertainment for the surrounding development. Last year we also heard they were courting large corporate tenants to anchor a new office building. If some corporation commits to leasing office space, that will also affect everything else. DPI is a go, but who knows when the state will come through with funding? I don't even think they've authorized OMA to proceed with the design.

And of course on the infrastructure side, it's hard to court tenants or even bring them to the site without street access, so that needs to get done. The site still feels like the end of the earth.

Update on the Wells-Wentworth Connector. The new bridge span for the Freeport Sub has been assembled next to its final location, while trains use a pair of temporary jump spans over the new bridge abutments. At some point in the next month or two, they will pull out the jump spans, get rid of the remaining dirt in between, and slide the new bridge into its final position.

For some reason the St Charles Air Line bridge across the river is still inactive, even though all the work on the east side of the river appears complete. Not sure why they haven't reactivated this bridge, but they'll probably put it back in service when they shut down the Freeport Sub for the bridge slide-in.

New bridge span (looks like one more steel member to bolt on after the slide)

New bridge with sacrificial beam, and temporary jump spans

Retaining walls completed

Nice update! Slide 1 is the new Wells st underpass connecting to Wentworth. There is also and existing underpass that needed upgrading and a new approach angle correct?

There are two new bridges as part of this project - the first one (on the north) is on Wells, below the St Charles Air Line. That bridge has been completed for over a year (but not yet placed in service). There was an old underpass at that location, but it was ripped out and replaced.

The 2nd bridge to the south is the one in the photo, on Wentworth under CN's Freeport Sub tracks.

FYI - while digging into this a bit, it looks like Related stopped discussions with Metra and the freight railroads about 2 years ago and has not resumed. Not a great sign for the relocation of Metra Rock Island tracks or the new Red Line stop.

Anyone have anymore info on that observation tower? Is it simply a frame with stairs that take u to the top for the views? A thousand foot stairwell?!? I just looked thru pics on their website. No elevator?
The style of the renderings so far seems somewhat blah. Like just a frame
