Buildings traditionally have "heavy" materials at the base to ground them. Even 151 N. Wacker for a really elegant modern version. Metal panel would not provide that feel. What if the material were exposed, site-cast concrete? Or marble, or black granite? Would you still feel this is clumsy?

There's so little of that material here, I do wonder if they're planning on using actual cut stone.

^ Real stone on the base would make this a very nice project indeed. It's already in the top 50% of towers simply because it has no discernible parking podium.

Basically everyone. We're looking to put our house on the market this year to trade up. Both my wife and the relator are browbeating me into repainting the entire interior, you guessed it, beige, to make it sell faster. The market delivers what people demand.

Tell your realtor to tell the buyers your house is "MoMA white". Should add a couple thou to the price.

If you white wash history, you forget that history. So while it is named after a fascist, it is now part of our history. I would rather have it reminding people of that time when we thought a fascist was cool and then WWII happened than have people forget about fascism altogether. Sometimes a little embarrassment is a good thing.

It's amazing the things that make homebuyer's eyes roll back in their heads. The house could be total shit, but if the walls are a pleasant shade of beige and there are granite countertops (or anything that passes as such, the average person has absolutely no knowledge of stone types) they start foaming at the mouth. I guess the ability to see beyond a property's current condition is limited to us building nerds. The properties I buy have literally been described by my friends as "something out of a Wes Craven movie", but to me I'm like "wow, look at this huge building, what a great structure!"

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the podium wall. Maybe it's too obvious how awful and hideous it is to be worth a comment, but man! That is simply terrible and a crime next to those historic beauties. Anyone know offhand what neighborhood groups/ward this falls under?

^ Agree. The podium is awful. Terrible design at street level. Everything above looks great though.

I actually suppose that in general I do not prefer (for new, contemporary construction) the traditional touch of towers incorporating heavier materials at their base to ground them (not that I don't appreciate this in many actual historic structures, to be sure). I much prefer towers that touch the ground 'lightly', and even 'float' above the surface in ethereal perfection.......

^^^ ^^

Definitely agree, and mentioned in my post on this one that the base does need to be redesigned........

Does anybody know where this proposal stands in the entitlement process, btw?

all these designers think they can now slap this pattern tile situation on these walls and everyone will just go "that's cool and fresh" and move along

I think I see a crane mast poking up in this one right where Cedar Hotel is too, in a few months the No. 9 Walton crane will also be protruding from the thicket.
