I love it. But of course, I love pretty well everything about this tower and Bjarke Ingels' genius. High rise apartments are usually small, close together and some variation of a box. How can it be otherwise for most units?
I think the design of the Vancouver House tower tries to find a balance between design to please the people on the inside and design to please the people on the outside that have to look at it. I do remember seeing some pretty weird floorplans though that worm their way around all that support infrastructure. That is the resident's sacrifice for all us others that are on the outside.
If you look closely at the cantilevered facade of Vancouver House, what you'll see in the beehive of units are cleverly placed windows and balconies that maximize privacy as much as possible while still providing a view. It reminds me of Bjarke Ingels' VIA 57 West in New York. I had an opportunity to spend a couple of hours taking photos of it a couple of years ago (see pics below). What I saw on the large facade on the north side (4th pic below) with the zigzag windows was a clever design to maximize the amount of light entering the units and still give a bit of a peekaboo view up and down the narrow street. Not ideal but way better than a flat facade would have been just looking straight at the building across the narrow street. Also, each unit has pretty good privacy from their neighbours eyes. As you stand near the corner window and look up and down the street, you wouldn't be able to see into your neighbours windows. Maybe your own bedroom window from the living room but not the unit next door (see 4th, 5th & 6th pics below).
I'm sure Bjarke thinks a lot about the experience of being in every single unit of all the apartment buildings he designs and comes up with the best formula to preserve the view, privacy and the overall integrity of the design of the tower. The view from most of those units on the cantilevered side of Vancouver House is only in one direction but that's no different from most apartments. And as soon as you step out on the balcony you can see north on Howe Street. Put yourself on any one of those balconies and you would not be able to see into your nieghbours unit. You might see just a bit of the outer part of your neighbour's balcony below but privacy for everyone is largely preserved.
