Lens magic. Long focal lenght compresses everything together regardless of distance.

Cool angle.
It makes the Charleson look so far inland!

Here’s an interesting LinkedIn update from the structural superintendent. Includes some good pics:

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update...36809420304384

The gist of his post is that they’ve reached the stage where they no longer need to use the forms constructed from steel I beams, as the floor plates are now wide enough to accommodate all the legs of a standard table form.

EDIT: You can see this clearly in the pics mcminsen posted right after me. Presumably the outside perimeter of the forms — which they’ll reuse for the remainder of the building — now predicts the final dimensions of the top (ie. rectangular) floors.

Pic by mcminsen, Feb 19 (see next post in thread).

For how intensely complicated this build is, its moving along at a good clip.

This doesn't look good to me. I don't like how they are so close together and like a box.

I think the rendering look so much nicer compare to reality.

Maybe with an exterior finish it would look better?

Yeah, it's a bit like the Galactic Senate Chamber in Star Wars.
There isn't much individuality there.

Should look a lot better when the panel wrap comes off and we see the different colours of the roof vs side panels.

I love it. But of course, I love pretty well everything about this tower and Bjarke Ingels' genius. High rise apartments are usually small, close together and some variation of a box. How can it be otherwise for most units?

I think the design of the Vancouver House tower tries to find a balance between design to please the people on the inside and design to please the people on the outside that have to look at it. I do remember seeing some pretty weird floorplans though that worm their way around all that support infrastructure. That is the resident's sacrifice for all us others that are on the outside.

If you look closely at the cantilevered facade of Vancouver House, what you'll see in the beehive of units are cleverly placed windows and balconies that maximize privacy as much as possible while still providing a view. It reminds me of Bjarke Ingels' VIA 57 West in New York. I had an opportunity to spend a couple of hours taking photos of it a couple of years ago (see pics below). What I saw on the large facade on the north side (4th pic below) with the zigzag windows was a clever design to maximize the amount of light entering the units and still give a bit of a peekaboo view up and down the narrow street. Not ideal but way better than a flat facade would have been just looking straight at the building across the narrow street. Also, each unit has pretty good privacy from their neighbours eyes. As you stand near the corner window and look up and down the street, you wouldn't be able to see into your neighbours windows. Maybe your own bedroom window from the living room but not the unit next door (see 4th, 5th & 6th pics below).

I'm sure Bjarke thinks a lot about the experience of being in every single unit of all the apartment buildings he designs and comes up with the best formula to preserve the view, privacy and the overall integrity of the design of the tower. The view from most of those units on the cantilevered side of Vancouver House is only in one direction but that's no different from most apartments. And as soon as you step out on the balcony you can see north on Howe Street. Put yourself on any one of those balconies and you would not be able to see into your nieghbours unit. You might see just a bit of the outer part of your neighbour's balcony below but privacy for everyone is largely preserved.

Interesting and growing profile as seen from the bus stop on Davie Street by the community garden.
