Flint Angels to launch investor group in partnership with statewide network

Quote:
The formation of a new angel investor group in the state, the Flint Angels, is expected to be announced Monday. The Flint Angels will be a partnership with the Grand Angels of Grand Rapids, which follows the model of other new angel groups around the state.

In February, a partnership with a new angel investor group in Southeastern Michigan, the Woodward Angels, was announced at a meeting at the Shinola Hotel in Detroit.

The Flint Angels will be a legal affiliate of Grand Angels Holding Co. LLC, the holding company for the Grand Rapids-based Grand Angels which does business as the Michigan Capital Network. The Grand Angels are considered the most active angel investor group in Michigan and one of the most active in the Midwest.
Quote:
Hagerman said that he likes the idea of angel investing "but I lack the time and rigor to do proper due diligence. For me, it's easy to fall in love with someone's idea, but having a back-office team helps in determining if there is enough structure in place for an investment to make sense. I fall in love very easily, but a good data point for me is if I'm giving someone a nine or a 10, and everyone else is giving them a four or a five."

"We reduce the risk," said Parker. "We bring people in with a variety of backgrounds together to look at deals. Flint deal flow will largely be what the members are interested in, but the Flint Angels will co-invest in deals statewide. We'll help Flint companies, and we'll help Flint investors reach out geographically."

The plan now is for the Flint Angels to hold six pitch events a year, with entrepreneurs getting the word out on what they are doing and how much money they need.

Parker said he has been meeting with other angel groups around the state and hopes to soon announce a formal relationship with another established angel group.

Director says Flint could be right home for Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame

Quote:
FLINT, MI -- After years of looking for a home for the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, LaMont Robinson thinks he may have found it in Flint.

Robinson, the founder and executive director of the foundation that’s pushing to build the proposed hall, is asking Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley to consider helping him bring the project to Flint. Neeley said Thursday, Nov. 14, that he hasn’t been briefed on the proposal, but is willing to listen.

Robinson promoted the idea of Flint as the permanent home of the hall in a news release Wednesday, Nov. 13.

“Flint has a history like no other,” Robinson said. “It would definitely give Flint a boost.”

A virtual hall has existed for years, and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Foundation has inducted more than 200 performers, publications, venues and radio stations at annual ceremonies -- most recently in June in Detroit -- while continuing to search for a home.

Past inductees include Michael Jackson, James Brown, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, and Robinson said he wants to honor those who have been recognized in a state-of-the-art institution with a 2,500-seat theater, restaurant, gift shop and after-school music academy.

Flint does seem like an odd location for this. The boost to local tourism and the local economy would be great, though.

From what I can see driving by, the plaza is progressing nicely on the Hilton Garden Inn. I wanted to get some shots of that this weekend, but this rain/ice storm threw a wrench in those plans.

Wrecking ball hits vacant old mill building near downtown Flint

Wrecking ball hits vacant old mill building near downtown Flint

By Ron Fonger | rfonger1@mlive.com
(This story has been updated to clarify information in it.)

FLINT, MI -- The last remnant of another era along the Flint River is disappearing after the owner of the old Burroughs mill property concluded a vacant storage building was too far gone to save.

Ridgway White, the owner of River City Developments LLC, said demolition of the building, which started Friday, Jan. 10, ended up as the only realistic option for the dilapidated structure on Grand Traverse Street, just south of the river.

....

Good riddance! Photos of the demo are in the article.

The plaza is taking shape, noticeable even with the snow. I'll definitely take more pictures from this vantage point in the future.

Flint’s Kettering University Breaks Ground on $63M Tech-centric Learning Commons
Quote:
Flint-based Kettering University today commenced construction of the Learning Commons, a $63-million, 105,000-square-foot, tech-centric multi-use facility that will serve as the academic hub of the campus. It is expected to be completed by the spring of 2022.

“This new facility represents a watershed investment in Kettering’s students, faculty, staff, and the Flint community,” says Robert K. McMahan, president of the university. “Investments like the ones we are making have a host of far-reaching implications, first and foremost, to our students. Through these investments, we boldly affirm our commitment to providing an academic environment that remains unrivaled anywhere in the country.”

The four-story building will include a digital library, auditorium, dining facilities, media resource centers, and collaborative workspaces that focus on mobility and artificial intelligence. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has granted $12.5 million to the university to build the Learning Commons and intends to grant up to an additional $12.5 million based on the project’s progress.

Construction on Clark Commons is well underway. This is a mixed-income public housing development just north of downtown (across Saginaw St. from University Commons, and adjacent to Smith Village). There will be townhomes and a 3-story apartment building.

$2.8-million renovation starts on vacant downtown Flint building

By Ron Fonger | rfonger1@mlive.com
FLINT, MI -- A three-story former bank building in downtown Flint is getting a $2.8-million renovation and will become the new home of the Greater Flint Health Coalition after having been vacant for more than a decade.

Kirk S. Smith, president and chief executive officer of the Health Coalition, said work began this week on the former Merchants & Mechanics Bank building at the corner of First Street and Buckham Alley, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation confirmed it’s awarded more than $400,000 to the project, completing the funding plan for the renovation.

Tony Vu is launching the Flint Social Club, Flint’s first food industry entrepreneurial incubator

Jonathan Diener
Feb. 2

In the company of Elon Musk and the “Sharks” from Shark Tank, Flint entrepreneur Tony Vu was recently listed as one of Inc. Magazine’s The Most Important Entrepreneurs of the Past Decade, and for good reason. First he launched Flint’s Vietnamese cuisine powerhouse MaMang as a food truck which later became a hotspot in the Flint Farmers’ Market. Then he opened The Good Bowl in Traverse City, with a more expansive menu and charitable donation model, but still utilizing the quick serve format. Now, Vu and local entrepreneur Jon Hardman (Naan Stop) are set to open the Flint Social Club, a brick and mortar food and entrepreneurial incubator on Court and Stevens St.
.....
I'll get a picture of this building soon. In 2009, it was slated to become a grocery store but that fell through.

^^^^The photos in this post aren't coming up for me.

I'm glad to hear about the Universal Building. I was unaware it was fully vacant. Downtown is inching closer and closer to full occupancy. Very exciting.

I realized you can't publicly share photos from Google Photos. Stupid. Here are some more recent pictures from around town. And, I wasn't aware that the Universal Building was unoccupied either.

These pictures are now a few days old (some a few weeks).
