Yokohama - Yokohama station, Isezaki, Kannai, Motomachi

Yokohama is the second most populated city in Japan but it's also a suburb of Tokyo.
It ha both the dual role of a major commercial hub in the south of Tokyo metropolitan area and a commuter city.

1. I've arrived from Central Tokyo using the JR East Tokaido line. Its route is express only serving Kawazaki station between Shinagawa in south central Tokyo and Yokohama.
On of the right, you can see the Yokosuka line train that do the route between Tokyo and Yokohama.

2. Train of the Keihin Tohoku line, it also lead to central Tokyo and the northern suburbs but serving all the station in between.

4. Yokohama station is a major transit hub. It's one of the world busiest station.
JR East lines, Tokyu, Keikyu, Sotetsu, Yokohama subway, Minato Mirail line. Several companies serve this station.

5. There is nothing really grand inside the station. Its impressive scale is the result of the number of different halls and shopping mall and department connected to it that create a massive complex.

41. I find this kind of urbanity fascinating. I don't think it would work elsewhere as well. There is just a massive two levels freeway in front a shopping streets. The massive power of a transit hub like Yokohama station means that even massive barriers like a freeway above a river are not enouth to isolate the area.

66. Yokohama subway network is rather small only two line. A major one (blue line) and one more minor (green line) that doesn't serve the city center.
Yokohama is already well served by all the railway lines leading to Tokyo.
Its subway was build to serve more local route instead of focusing toward Tokyo.

I think this is the first time I have seen control gates for a subway to provide safety from the track and incoming trains.

Platform doors are quite common all over the world.
Those in Japan are rather low height.
In Paris metro, half height platform doors are at least 5ft7 (170cm tall).

Your Japanese threads no matter which city or area or spot you took photos, they all look the "same".

I loved Yokohama. It seemed to have a surprisingly large number of historic buildings, a lot of churches, and a lot of art deco. We made sure to visit the mall in the historic brick warehouses by the waterfront, and we went to Chinatown, the Foreigners Cemetery, and the big flower garden downtown. It was really cool to see the strip of Victorian houses on the street by the cemetery. That's definitely not something you'd expect in Japan.

Yokohama was developed to be open to foreign traders in the 19th century. This explains the foreign influences.

212. Minato Mirai line is an underground line built under the center of Yokohama and opened in 2004.
This line was build to create better connection between Yokohama station, Minato Mirai 21 and old Donwtown area (Kannai) to help development. Motomachi-Chūkagai station is its southern end.
It's not part of Yokohama subway and it has through service with the Tokyu Toyoko line toward Shibuya in western Central Tokyo.
