Tribune article about the disappearing parking lots in downtown. Not much new stuff, but it looks like a tower by Fifield is planned for 630 S. Wabash:
Quote:
The developer also has a contract to buy a parking lot at 630 S. Wabash Ave., where it plans a 20-story, 153-unit apartment building, Fifield said.
I despise the surface lots on Wabash ave with a passion, and am happy that they're starting to disappear.

The last time I walked by that lot, it was peppered with homemade "NO CONDO" signs. Good luck with that, enterprising NIMBY citizen.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled about this project in the first place, but now with the blue AND green glass, I'm even less enthusiastic.

Are they still going to have those bay windows on top of the northside of the building or were those scratched? The glass color blend looks very mid 90's.

Too bad they couldn't rebuild the Dexter Building there, and then buy that absolutely hideous building next door and build the tower there.

There were soo many more even 5 or 10 years ago. Its crazy how quickly we are whittling them away. I just hope that they are developed in a dense manner with retail to facilitate pedestrian activity. The stretch of Wabash south of Jackson can feel sparse, although I suppose that's because currently its more parking lot and building fronting the street.

And what by chance would these activist citizens want instead for this site, located smack in the commercial core of the city? Keeping the muddy, garbage strewn lot as it is?

The green and blue glass looks a bit goofy I'll admit, but I think it will play well at that intersection once its complete, contrasting well with the beige concrete, red brick and white terra cotta of the buildings in the immediate vicinity.

That's my hope at least.

Just looking at the site on Google Earth, I'm struggling to find a building that would even have it's views blocked by this development, which I assume is the major reason for this NIMBY.

I don't think this is the work of a traditional NIMBY; more likely a 19 year-old Columbia student who thinks every new development is 'condos' and every real estate developer 'the Monopoly man'.

The NO CONDO signs appeared months ago, long before there was any talk of development on the site. I figure they were either left over from some Pilsen or Avondale dispute, or some Columbia student put them there as a bit of a jape.

Conveniently placed atop of a couple vodka bottles. Perhaps drunken shenanigans by a Columbia student? Lol.

Just FYI for anyone interested

The field museum earthcam shows OBP, Vista, Essex on the Park, and 1101 S Wabash when panorama is selected.
