I hope they institute something new that will be able to be a safe haven for graffiti artists like this. Some great work up there.

That's a damn shame. I remember catching a glimpse of it from an elevated station a couple years ago...

It's a damn shame. Great photos. Here's one I took in May 2001 from the roof of 5 Pointz (then called the Phun Factory). My friend lived there (illegally). End of an era, for sure.

That's so sad. Out of all of the perfect candidates for redevelopment in the immediate area these people still chose to get rid of one of New York's most quintessential outer borough properties. Of course the artists are going to find a new spot, but where? Does anyone know of any good contenders?

Here's one I took a couple years ago:

There's always the Bronx. Plenty of old warehouses up there.

Maybe East New York or Bushwick?

^ my hope would be a southeast bronx warehouse, but those are well used and there is no residential nearby (although there is a hipster node on the western end of the south bronx around the old piano factories).

it definately wont be the industrial zone between brownsville and east ny. no residential or hipsters around there to speak of.

where it is going is, not surprizingly, northern bushwick. tons of great graffiti and more is a-booming out there:

https://m.facebook.com/TheBushwickCo....com%252F&_rdr

just take the 'ol L train aka the hipster highway out to the jefferson stop, get out and bob's your uncle. have a look around. its much more spread out than the single 5pointz bldg of course, but its fun to see. i was there there other day, too -- heres a couple pics for now:

When I heard the news a couple years ago, I was heart broken. I remember growing up riding the red birds. I was barely tall enough to look out the window of the train, so I stood on my toes and managed to see the train curving around this warehouse full of graffiti. An amazing sight.

There will most likely, hopefully, be a relocation. The best place is definitely The Bronx. The Bronx is truly the "last frontier" for true counter culture in this ever gentrifying/sterile city. If relocated in bushwick, I give it another 10 years tops before it suffers the same fate of the current warehouse.

The problem with many of these installations is the good practitioners (and some of these are very, very good) encourage copycat artistes that deliver form, function, and fantasy of a less elegant decibel

No one needs to see TreTrez tag on a dozen ash cans; but that is what we often get. Pointillist Tupac's, exotically melting skeletons and B-girls in neon are not the norm but the creme. It will be sad to them go, but exciting to see where they reanimate.

I wish every city had something like this! Las Vegas? Beneath the glitter, anyone realize what an old-fashioned, conservative city this is?

Oakland has a lot of warehouses like that. One in particular called Lucasey Manufacturing on the AmTrak tracks has been a hotspot for decades.

Some of the best tags and pieces in the Bay are over there.

^ good stuff, but now imagine if all the work on all the warehouses in oakland was on just one of them, then it might be more like 5pointz. i think a designated, legal place to make this work, with some rules, would be quite a sight in any city. and a lot of fun for everybody.

looks like 5pointz got a temporary reprieve from the wrecking ball:

WHY? Seems like such an institution at this point - a living, work-in-progress art museum. There's real quality artwork up there. Not everyone wants to or has the opportunity to sell to established galleries - this is a unique and awesome place for art, and this art clearly tells a story - an homage to the area and to NYC. I think I shed a tear at the thought of this facing a wrecking ball.

What would replace this? It's LIC, but is it even in an area that could host an overpriced rental/condo? Or is it an even more wasteful demolition with nothing to take its place due to the industrial nature of the area?
